World Atlas of Biodiversity. the first map-based view of global biodiversity. It is the best current synthesis of the latest research and analysis by UNEP-WCMC and the conservation community worldwide - providing a comprehensive and accessible view of key global issues in biodiversity.

The EROS Data CenterDistributed Active Archive Center (EDC DAAC) was established as part of NASA's Earth Observing System (EOS) Data and Information System (EOSDIS) initiative to process, archive, and distribute land-related data collected by EOS sensors, thereby promoting the inter-disciplinary study and understanding of the integrated Earth system.  Site includes the Global Land Cover Characteristics Database where the land cover data are provided in a generic image array format (flat, header less, binary raster data) to maximize the flexibility for importing into a variety of commercial software packages.

The World Resources Institute Earth Trends provides searchable databases, data tables, country profiles, maps and feature articles on ten theme areas.

Perry-Castaņeda Library Map Collection at the University of Texas has over 5000 public domain map images.  Excellent collection of links to maps on other web sites.  Cartographic Reference Resources provides information on online gazetteers, distance calculators, time zone maps, map projections and bibliographies, glossaries and guides.

Library of Congress Maps: The Geography and Map Division holds more than 4.5 million items, of which Map Collections represents only a small fraction that have been converted to digital form. These images were created from maps and atlases and, in general, are restricted to items that are in public domain, meaning those which are not covered by copyright protection.
