Ted is originally from Wilmington, Delaware, and has lived and worked in New York City since 1990. He recently designed “42nd Street” for the Tropicana, and “Anything Goes”, "Cabaret" and "Singin’ in the Rain" for the Trump Plaza hotels in Atlantic City. In Las Vegas, he designed a revue of Stevie Wonder's songs, directed by Billy Porter and starring Chaka Khan, for the Venetian, worked for Tim Hatley on "Spamalot" at the Wynn, and was his associate for "The Country Girl" revival on Broadway in 2008.
This spring, Ted is the associate scenic designer for both the “Blithe Spirit” and “Exit the King” revivals on Broadway, the latter a Tony nominee for Best Scenic Design of a Play. In 2008, he served as associate for Broadway productions of “Boeing-Boeing”, "Rock 'n' Roll", and "Grease". He was co-associate to Melly Still and Ti Green for 2007's Tony Award nominated design of "Coram Boy", and the US associate to John Doyle for the 2005 "Sweeney Todd" revival and its 1st National Tour. Ted was the associate to Bob Crowley for both the 2000 Tony winning Best Scenic Design of Disney’s "Aida", and also for his 2001 Tony nominated and Drama Desk Award winning Best Design of a Play for Tom Stoppard's "The Invention of Love" at Lincoln Center Theater.
Among Ted's Off-Off-Broadway play premieres are productions at Circle Rep Lab, H.B. Playwrights' Foundation, Pulse Ensemble, EST/Playwrights' Collective, Naked Eye/Kasbah Project, Soho Rep, and two seasons of new plays as the resident designer for the Miranda Theatre Company. Regional credits range from the John W. Engeman theatre (Northport, NY), U of DE's PTTP and Princeton University, to Fairfield County Stage Co. (Westport, CT) and Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park.
Related work includes the TV-Land Mall Tour and “Gullah Gullah Island Live” shows for Nickelodeon, a double bill for the Bronx Opera Company, two teleplays for WQED-TV in Pittsburgh, and Colin Cowie's Everyday Elegance Thanksgiving Special for DesignTV and the WE network in 2002.
Ted's designs for the new musical "Ebenezer", in New York during Christmas of '96, led to work on ten shows for Surflight Theatre in Beach Haven, NJ, during their '98 season, plus three more during '99, followed by "Gigi" in '01, "On the Town" in '02, “Fiddler on the Roof” in ’03, “State Fair” in ’04 and “Shenandoah” in '05 and “Will Rogers Follies” in ’08, all three starring John Davidson, plus "Annie Get Your Gun" in '06, "Aida" in '07, and “All Shook Up” in '08, and "Hairspray" in '09.
Other summers include two seasons each at Williamstown Theatre Festival, the Santa Fe and Glimmerglass Operas. Ted also spent two seasons in New York designing classics for the American Globe Theatre.
Other assistant design work includes ten international and touring companies of "Beauty and the Beast", two new musicals at Goodspeed Opera, and "A Christmas Carol" at Madison Square Garden. In addition, Ted has drafted and built models for sixteen new productions at the Metropolitan Opera, and done renderings for dozens of commercials and industrials. He also drafted the ‘03 Broadway season's Tony nominated “Hairspray” and '05's "All Shook Up", both designed by the Rockwell Group, as well as Eugene Lee’s Tony award winning design for '04's "Wicked", and '06's "The Wedding Singer" and "The Lieutenant of Inishmore" for Scott Pask.
Ted's undergraduate degree in Art (abstract oil painting) is from Brown University, where he joined the Alpha Delta Phi fraternity, and his MFA in Scenic Design is from Carnegie Mellon University. Ted has been a member in good standing of United Scenic Artists Local 829 of the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees since 1992. He and his partner of twenty years are the proud fathers of twin sons.
