These big headed flowers grow at forest edge and in meadows of the mountains of Northwest Montana. The head is six inches across. They are listed to bloom from May-August. Bears eat the young shoots and Mountain Goats eat the older leaves. They will grow together in large colonies on hillsides.

The leaf looks like dogtooth violot but the flower is quite different. This one was growing near Eagle Mountain in the Arrowhead part of Minnesota.

This speciman was along a woodland mountain trail near Thompson Falls, MT. The flowers appear on a nodding umbel. This plant is in the fruiting stage.

Plants are generally about a foot high with three leaves on top of a stem.

This picture was taken by laying the camera on the ground and shooting up. The flower is hidden under the leaves.

The Declining Trillium, T. nivale, has a longer peduncle.

The western trillium has a smaller flower than the Showy Trillium. Both will have the flower turn pale purple with age as shown with this speciman.

This trillium is heavy in the woods of Minnesota. The flower turns purple with age. A purple Trillium emerges yellow and stays purple. The flower is slightly smaller.

A purple Trillium emerges yellow and stays purple. The flower is slightly smaller. I have not seen this in the wild only at Eloise Butler Wildflower Garden.

This wildflower is what I called as a child purple trillium. The purple trillium is similar to the showy but purple. This upfacing flower is a deep dark marroon. Eloise Butler Wildflower Garden does have a couple of specimen. The dappled leaves are quite nice when not in bloom.
Solomonseals and Related.
These plants have alternating leaves from a central stalk with flowers either underneath or at the end.

Notice, the berry stage. The berries occur at the end for the False Solomonseal.

Starry False Solomonseal has a small starry cluster of flowers. Could not determine if this was one.

The leaf structure is much the same as Solomonseal with two dangling little white bell flowers hanging at the end. Bloomes in June.

The leaves are quite large almost like an orchid. The flower is green on a tall shoot. Within pods on the spikes are clusters of green flowers. The plant grows in moist areas in the mountains. Also grows in Minnesota but I have not seen it there.
