Rufus was first married to Nellie Reid, daughter of William Thomas Hardy Reid and Mary Elenor Gale. They were married May 17, 1910 in Aztec, San Juan County, New Mexico and then sealed October 1, 1926 in the St. George Temple of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. Rufus and Nellie were the parents of Ina Ruth, Clarence W., Rufus Corwyn, Don Carlos, Nellie Percinda, Goldie Leroy, George William, Florence Irene, Lillian Irene, and Floyd Gilbert.

Rufus' second marriage was to Bonita Katherine Christine Shuetz, daughter of Henry Phillip Shuetz and Catherina Thuring. Rufus and Bonita were married on March 25, 1936 in Fruitland San Jaun County, New Mexico. Rufus and Bonita did not have any children.

Rufus Nathaniel Adair passed away on April 28, 1959 at San Juan Hospital in Farmington, New Mexico. He was laid to rest at the Bloomfield Cemetery in Bloomfield, New Mexico.
