Joseph Welton Adair was born on June 17, 1881 in Nutrioso, Apache County, Arizona Territory. He was the ninth child born to George Washington Adair and Emily Perscinda Tyler: Olive Parintha, Emily Jane, Daniel Tyler, Samuel P., William Albert, John Washington, George Newton, Ruth Alice, Joseph Welton, Rufus Nathaniel, and Edna Irene. He also has a half brother and sister, George Washington Jr. and Jemima, through his father's previous marriage to Ann Catherine Chestnut.

April 8, 1911 he was married to Sarah Adelia Taylor, daughter of Independence Taylor and Julia A. Taylor in Salt Lake City, Utah. They were sealed in the Salt Lake City Temple. Joseph and Sarah were the parents of Carrie Taylor, Joseph Welton Jr., Mark Twain, Riley, and Ruth Alice.

Sarah was born on November 6, 1882 in New Harmony, Washington County, Utah and passed away on May 23, 1949 in Cedar City, Iron County. She is buried in New Harmony, Washington County, Utah. After Joseph's death she married Randell Lunt.

Joseph Sr. passed away on November 9, 1926 in Washington County, Utah and is also buried in New Harmony, Washington, Utah.
