2. Patriarchal Blessing, LDS Archives 690-365: "Spanish Fork Utah Co June 28, 1891. A Patriarchal blessing given by G.W. Brimhall upon the head of Charles Henry Hales son of Charles Henry Hales and Julia Ann Lockwood. Born Garden Grove, Dakota Co.[should be Decatur Co.], Iowa State Sept. 17, 1848. Bro. Chas. by Virtue and authority of the holy Melchisedek Priesthood by which I have been ordained to bless the fatherless I lay my hands upon your head. Thou are a son of Joseph who was sold into Egypt even the Hebrew boy born in the tents of Ephriam and undoubted right to the blessing of the holy fathers, prophets, seers, and revelators. See thou honor as one of the diadems in the crown of thy father and mother and thou shalt live in good health of body with good judgement of mind to labor in Zion for to build up Zion. Thou shalt open thy mouth when thou art called to be a judge and judge right judgement and plead the cause of the poor and place a blanket upon the widows shoulder and coverings for the orphans feet. I seal upon thee long life upon the earth. Thou shalt be mighty in testimony in preaching the gospel of christ for the salvation of the souls of the children of men. I seal upon thee the gift of the holy spirit that thou shalt interpret the language of a strange people that is of the house Israel unto whom the Lord will send thee and thou shalt bring them up to the centre Stake of Zion to build the walls round about and holy house unto the most high. A warranted deed which is in thy father for lands in the regions round about thou shalt inherit as one of his legal heirs. I seal upon thee a crown of imperial majesty and government of thyself all the days of thy mortal life. Thou shalt keep the commandments of the Lord. No poisonous reptile shall harm thee and the viper shall not leave its venomous in thy bosom for I seal upon thee to forgive all mankind their trespasses and sins. I seal upon thee eternal life to come forth in the morning of the first resurrection and be glorified with the the redeemed of the Lord. Even so. Amen. Sina Brimhall Rec."

3. From Hales Chronicles online at www.hales.org mentions Charles in the autobiography of grandson Melvin Donald Hales: "It was a cold and dreary day in Junction, Piute County, Utah, when to my knowledge I made my first appearance on this earthly hemisphere as a mortal being on January 3rd, 1910. I was privileged to have, to my estimation, the most wonderful earthly parents, Mr. and Mrs. William Heber Hales, that has been brought forth in any dispensation since the beginning and creation of this earth. My first recollection of my childhood was during a period of time that my father was Marshall and it was one of his duties to ring the church bell at 9 p.m. every night signifying that it was curfew time and that all youngsters should be home. This obligation he delegated to us children. There were five of us children at this time: Lorin, Ernest, Wildon, myself and Jesse. Jesse was only two years old at this time so Lorin and I paired off and Ernest and Wildon. We had many varied experiences during our childhood as some of the Ute Indians weren't too friendly and had maintained an hostile attitude toward the white settlers in the Junction area which my Grandfather Hales had been instrumental in settling. While I encountered no violence personally, some of my Father's relatives were massacred. Listening to my parents and friends discussing many of the interesting events that took place with the Indians never failed to fill us with dread and I was more than a little reluctant to retire at night..."

4. Tom Kermen's email of 19 Jan 2003, Kermen@att.net, included the following letter from Wanda Hales, aunt of his wife Karen Viola Hales. Wanda indicates the following information was given by Mary Ann Jensen (wife of Orval Woodruff Hales) as told to her by Jemima Ann: "Jemima Ann Adair was born March 27, 1863 at a small town called 'The Muddy' just over the Arizona line. Mother was Ann Chestnut Adair. Father was George Washington Adair. Another family by the name of Carson was at this same place at the same time. Jemima Ann's mother died at the time of her birth and the Carson family had just lost their new born baby. George Adair gave Jemima Ann to the Carson family to raise as their own. The Carson family then moved to Parowan. She always thought they were her parents until she married when she was told her real name. She married Charles Henry Hales the 29th of March 1878 just two days past her 15th birthday. They settled in Kanarra where her first boy was born. She was married in polygamy, the third wife. Two more sons were born to her at Kanarra. In 1885 they homesteaded a farm in Junction where she spent the rest of her life. A daughter, May, died in 1895 at age 6 from a typhoid epidemic. Her husband also contracted typhoid which caused complications and left him a semi-invalid. They bought a town lot and built a large hotel 1902-1903 with the help of her boys. She had eight children including a set of twins. Charles Henry Hales was a carpenter by trade. He built a large recreation hall for the community before he built the hotel. He also made all the caskets for the burials at that time. Charles Henry Hales died in 1908 [error; should be 1907]. Jemima Ann worked hard all her life, first on the farm and later running the hotel. She died Jan. 2, 1919."

BIRTH: 1. Patriarchal Blessing cited above. 2. Per tombstone.

BURIAL: Per Hales tombstone in Junction Old Cemetery [which is across the street from the New Hilltop Cemetery] apparently placed very recently [older white tombstone still exists] which reads: Grandfather Charles Henry, Sept. 17, 1848 - Apr. 7, 1907. Grandmother Jemima Ann Adair, Mar. 27, 1863 - Jan 2, 1919. Children: Ida May, Apr. 18, 1886 - June 30, 1895. George Ammon, Aug. 24, 1879 - Oct. 31, 1897. I also have on file a handwritten map of this cemetery where someone identified 42 names and their locations. On this list are the four individuals above and they are buried in the northeast corner. None of the other 38 names appear connected to my family history. The compiler of the information does state that the names of many others are long forgotten.

!ACTION: 1. Look at source film of Junction Ward; hasn't yet been verified by me. 2. Learn more about Black Hawk War. 3. Find marriage record in Kanarra or St. George temple records. Was Jemima a polygamous wife? Second wife Elizabeth appears to have a child after Charles' marriage to wife if the 1878 marriage date is correct; both wives had children in Aug. 1879. 4. Find death info on Elizabeth Thompson. Might be in Kanarra or Parowan since husband Charles lived in Kanarra from 1878 and moved thereafter to Parowan until he moved to Junction in 1884. On the other hand, her last child of record appears to have been born in Spanish Fork in 1879 after the 1878 move date of Charles to Kanarra. 5. Obituary mentions he had 15 children - I have only records for 14. Who is the fifteenth child? Obituary also mentions 10 living at the time of his death which is correct to my records - so the missing child may have died young. 6. Locate 1870 census. Change Date: 3 MAY 2003 at 23:26:44
