Different sports bars and drinks have various functions. Some
provide simple sugar for quick energy. Others contain complex
carbohydrates and protein for energy, growth and repair. A few -
comprised of 30% fat - tout the notion that to lose fat you must
ingest fat. And the latest craze is 100 calorie, disposal packets
of instant syrup, appropriately termed "goo."
Sports bars, drinks and engineered foods are not short-cuts to
proper nutrition. Beware of expensive, fat-burning, muscle-building
promises. They can not replace real food, but can supply some extra
energy and/or protein when an athlete cannot get a well-balanced meal.

A number of relaxation techniques can help you undo the
ravages of stress: meditating, tightening and loosening each
muscle group in your body one after another, closing your eyes
and visualizing a soothing scene, and listening to peaceful music.
Just sitting quietly and breathing slowly and evenly can also help.
Close your eyes and inhale and exhale slowly through your nose.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture's (USDA) dietary standards may be
most familiar to Americans in its common incarnation as the "Food Pyramid."
The Pyramid's broad base echoes the USDA call for large daily amounts of
dietary grains, fruits, and vegetables. It tapers to small recommendations
for meats and dairy products, and ends in narrow daily allowances of sugars
and fats.
The average person though consumes about 420 pounds of sugar per year.
Dr. Tinsley recommends cutting back on sugar intake but not simply changing
to a sugar substitute. Man-made sweeteners are never as compatible with
your body as what nature has provided. Sugar has lots of calories and can
contribute to dental plaque but those factors can be countered by increasing
your activity and by brushing and flossing your teeth.

A reader asks if using honey is better than regular sugar.
Nope. Both are quickly absorbed and just as quickly lead to blood
sugar crashes in many people. About the only difference is color
and consistency; although honey contains small amounts of certain
vitamins, they are not enough to be significant in most populations.
However, mothers who sweeten foods for young children and infants
should be aware that spores from Clostridium Botulinum bacteria may
be present in clover honey. Although adults generally are not susceptible
to the ungerminated spores, infants may be, and since the botulinum
neurotoxin is the deadliest poison known to mankind, this alone ought to
dissuade you from feeding it to very young children. Better to use fruit
juice or table sugar than to introduce a potentially deadly health risk to
their diet.

Statistical evidence on the subject of a positive attitude versus illness
is hard to come by. But studies suggest the following:
Happy people are less likely to develop cancer than unhappy
people.
Laughter raises the ability of the immune system to fight viruses.
Partners in a happy marriage get fewer colds and have stronger
disease-fighting systems than partners in an unhappy marriage.
Soothing music can make the body better able to withstand pain.
