KASIO MONTIGO 2004

A truly original dose of many musical styles and influences, wrapped inside a humor-filled package that make a truly beguiling and irresistibly, captivating release. It`s hard to pin down general references as each song has a different launching pad but you`ll hear such oddities as Captain Beefheart/Zappa playing with CCR and The Neville Brothers on the same night. Others remind me of Adrian Belew, Not Lame faves The Irresponsible and The Montgomerys, as well as Barenaked Ladies, Camper Van Beethoven and The Flaming Lips. Like we hinted at....eclectic, but oh so very cool!

NOT LAME RECORDS
January 2005

Kasio Montigo is a highly entertaining album. Yes, while humor, weirdness, and wackiness still reign supreme in the world of the Drool Brothers, the band brings even more legitimacy to its already impressive stylings courtesy of the remarkably solid musical performances on the disc. With Kasio Montigo, the Drool Brothers have not only made another great party record, but they’ve proven that its more than possible to make a party record with style. Play on, my white-boy funk-rock heroes … Play on, indeed.

DELUSIONS OF ADEQUACY
Gary Blackwell - June 2004

This eclectic album is done with a lyrical approach that exemplifies the ironies and vulnerablilities of people with a laugh. Their sound is one all their own.

THE FIRST RECORD 2001

Combining the far-out concepts of Frank Zappa, off-beat lyricism of Tom Waits, and the funky grooves and pop beat of George Clinton and P-Funk, The Drool Brothers have created a sound that college radio stations have become famous for.

As one of the few white guys who will admit to still loving The Artist (you know, Prince) after all these years of acting like a fool, The Drool Brothers come along and show me just how funky and silly and sane and skilled you're supposed to be, Prince: you idiot. ....one of the most original bands I've yet heard.

Two guys with some silly songs, although not quite as silly as the name Drool Brothers would suggest. Chuck Mancillas and Tom Slik throw down their tongue-in-cheek grooves along the same lines as G. Love & Special Sauce, mixing up the funk with blues and acid jazz jams. It's a great blend of musical styles, and it seems to flow with ease. The main silliness comes in the subject matter, evident in titles like Chicken Stix and Skeleton Girl. But for the most part, their rhythms just cook with serious intent, never mind the fact that their lyrics are delivered with a smirk. In effect, it's an album you can have fun with, without losing the all-important groove. MISH MASH Mandate: Salivating Grooves

THE FIRST Cont....."

Allow me to first acknowledge the fact that the Drool Brothers' self-titled CD is one of the strangest and most fun listening experiences I've had in quite some time......." By far, though, my favorite track on the album is "Blue Velvet Pig Mask." Simply put, this song would be the ULTIMATE porno soundtrack song for the year 2001. The chorus had me rolling in my cubicle for an entire day at work ("Put on the Blue Velvet Pig Mask/Turn me around and spank me in the butt/Put on the Blue Velvet Pig Mask/Oink three times and call me a slut"). The music rules, too - a slow, deliberate funk track with a killer guitar solo that manages to be effective, but not too flashy. Of course, in typical porno-love-theme fashion, the track clocks in at over seven minutes. (see link for complete review)

DELUSIONS OF ADEQUACY February 15th 2001

The Drool Brothers have created a sound all their own, fusing Funk and Pop with Rhythm and Blues, and a little bit of Rock. You can hear influences from just about every decade since the 60's manifest themselves in these songs. They come close to Fishbone's sound, but are more relaxed, and their eclectic instruments, like sitars and a farsifa organ, add a goofy feel.

HALLOWEENISH REVIEW

The band adds a new
and fresh perspective to popular music creating a sound all their own. The single track's complexity of different somber and scary sounds exemplifies the band's musical talent, ranging from a rock appeal to jazz and ska. There is also the disco version of Halloweenish that had a great Nine Inch Nails sound to it. Needless to say, DROOL BROS. single track is powerful in it's musical effect. If you ask me, this local band will be sky-rocketing up the charts.

CAN'T LICK IT - REVIEWS

This is lots of fun. Nice arrangement. It's cool to hear a track that keeps throwing intersting weird sounds at you. I don' know if these are influences, but I was reminded of a wide range of people from Mancini to the New York Dolls, but mixed together in an unpredictable and interesting way. Nice Job! David Wilcox meets Smash Mouth---Excellent. The most Original Song I have reviewed yet.

I'm really not sure how to describe this one. It's sort of like a minimalistic Soul Coughing funk band art project. Strange sounds and samples, keyboards and loops, and character improvs listed as "interviewer" or "sex girl" or "skeleton suit seeker" add to the musical chaos. It's a little like spaced-out improv jazz at times, moving through long instrumentals, and also some really jumpy beats that make you want to dance, but you're too busy trying to figure out what the hell the lyrics are. You'll also notice some smooth, '70s-style porn movie rhythms tripped out with electronic flute, and some bongo beats that make you want to snap your fingers.
