GRISSOM Family Genealogy Mailing List
(this file created 18 July 1997)
WELCOME to the GRISSOM Family list. Save this message. Yes, it is a
little long, but you don't need to memorize it - Einstien didn't know his
own telephone number - why memorize when you can look it up? No, don't
just *save* it, print it out & keep it handy when you need reference
for the list commands & our list rules. List rules? You bet...This
is not an unmoderated newsgroup on USENET. First things, first.
Your list owner is Sandi Dreer
This is a discussion area for anyone who has an interest in genealogy
related to the GRISSOM family, including
-
Grisham
-
Grishem
-
Grissam
-
Grissum
-
or any other related spelling.
To post a message to the list, send it to GRISSOM
Family Mailing list. The preferred subject line for posting to the
list is (& I am using mine as examples):
GRISSOM, 1811-1997, MS>AR>OK>TX,USA, dreernospam@att.net
GRISSOM, John Elzie, 1811-?, MS>AR>OK>TX,USA, dreernospam@att.net
This format will allow easy sorting of mail for list members
as well as giving a good description of the topic for your target audience
of cuzzins on this list. This format may look familiar - it is based on
the format used for the Roots Surname List on Rootsweb.
DON'T STOP READING, YET!
There is a lot of important information in this message, including general
information about lists as well as specific information about this list.
I'll be glad to help you if you have problems, but I'll also be frank:
if you don't have time to read this message and learn the proper way to
use lists, you shouldn't be subscribed. Please take just a few minutes
to read this message. Keep it so you can refer to it later.
-
Follow the instructions exactly - the server is not intelligent - it
does what we tell it to do (even though it is called SMARTLIST!)
-
Speling cownts...er...spelling counts when you send the GRISSOM-L-request@rootsweb.com
or GRISSOM-D-request@rootsweb.com
(aka smartlist) a command - if it is typed wrong - it probably won't work.
-
If you decide to leave the list, please unsubscribe.
-
If you change internet service providers, please unsubscribe first,
then if you want re-subscribe with your new e-mail address.
-
If you go on vacation, please unsubscribe until you return - this will keep your
mailbox from getting overcrowded & will keep messages from bouncing.
Bounced messages seem to irritate list members.
If you forget to unsubscribe - you will be automatically unsubscribed
after smartlist sees a four (4) bounced messages.
-
Please do NOT send HTML messages to the list. Please verify that all
messages sent to the list are sent as "plain text". Not all list members
have the same email software and such.
-
Please do not send your list commands (UNSUB/SUB/...) to GRISSOM-L@rootsweb.com
- this tends also to irritate list members.
-
Please do not send binary files to the list (JPGs, GIFs, Bitmaps, etecetera,...)
-
The list is set up for replies to the original poster if you are in
MAIL mode & to the entire list if you are in DIGEST mode. Check your
headers before making your replies - is the reply pertinent to the entire
mailing list? If not, please change the "Mail To" from the list to the
original poster.
-
Please do not send large files like GEDCOM attachments to the list
-
Please do not send messages warning about any VIRUSES to the list -
your computer cannot get a virus by reading an e-mail. E-mail is a text
file. Viruses are executable files. However, you should be careful about
downloading information sent to you since there are some viruses which
like to reside in certain file types. To learn more about virus hoaxes,
check these links: http://sckb.ucssc.indiana.edu/kb/data/afjv.html,http://straylight.cso.niu.edu/nats/goodtime.htm
-
Please remember we do not all have access to the same operating systems
or software or software versions - some list members do not have the latest
version of your favorite software, so if you send a large Word 6.0 file
attachment, you can potentially crash their systems if the system they
use cannot handle the large attachment. Please ask what format to send
before sending an attached file to a GRISSOM listmember.
-
Please use mixed case in your message text - it is much easier to read
than all CAPS (not to mention all CAPS is considered to be hollerin' on
the net...)
-
Please set your word wrap to no more than 78 characters per line - remember,
not all the listmembers have access to the same software - older software
may not word wrap.
-
Please remember not every listmember has the same experience with computers
- we are all at different levels, so just because it is intuitive to you
doesn't mean it is clear to everyone or anyone else. ;>
-
Additional "netiquette" info can be found at http://www.fau.edu/rinaldi/netiquette.html
-
No advertising is allowed on this list. If you have a source/resource
requiring payment that you feel would be helpful to other GRISSOM cuzzins,
send the information to me & I will add it to my mailing list resource
webpage.
-
Your list owner is a *volunteer* - list ownership is not a paying position
and I'm a single parent whose life is filled with PTA, afterschool activities
& work and would like for
this list to run smoothly... When subscribers do not follow the list rules,
that means your list owner has less time for GRISSOM research of her own.
Whew, thanks for letting me say that......
I apologize to the experienced net users who may find my "rules" intuitive,
but there are newbies out there who don't know all this & need to be
able to avoid some of the pitfalls we've faced in the past.
SOMETIMES THE LISTS ARE SLOW, SO GIVE YOUR MAIL A DAY OR TWO, ESPECIALLY
IF YOU ARE IN DIGEST MODE.
Another problem lies with your mail handler. List servers automatically
read your mail address off your incoming message. Your mail header MAY
have the wrong address in it. Send yourself a message to find out your
outgoing address.
If you have persistent problems, contact me
direct! Put "GRISSOM-L problems" in the subject....
PLEASE READ AND SAVE THIS ENTIRE MESSAGE.....THANKS
Please read the rest of this message carefully. Pay special
attention to the ADDRESSES. If you are using Netscape as a browser, you'll
be able to click on the links to send mail since they are in HTML format
and linked.
The list is not moderated, but like I mentioned earlier, it's not
USENET. Any message sent to it is automatically bounced back out to everyone
on the list. While I in no way want to stifle free discussion, as list
owner, I reserve the right to step in if a flame war erupts that becomes
tedious for other subscribers, or if someone becomes unseemly (excessive
use of profanity, for instance).
This list is set up to send replies to the post author. If
you want your reply to go to the entire list, you must change to the list
server address.
PLEASE SAVE THIS MESSAGE. To subscribe to the list, send a
message to GRISSOM-L-request@rootsweb.com
with the following text only: subscribe
To UNSUBSCRIBE , send a message to GRISSOM-L-request@rootsweb.com
with the following text and no other text (turn off your signature): unsubscribe
DO NOT SEND SUBSCRIBE/UNSUBSCRIBE MESSAGES TO GRISSOM-L@rootsweb.com!!!
To change to the DIGEST mode, you must first unsubscribe from the MAIL
mode. To unsubscribe, send a message to GRISSOM-L-request@rootsweb.com
with the following text and no other text (turn off your signature): unsubscribe.
You can subscribe to the DIGEST mode by sending: subscribe to GRISSOM-D-request@rootsweb.com.
To go back to regular MAIL mode from the DIGEST mode, you should
first UNSUBSCRIBE from the DIGEST mode. To unsubscribe, send a message
to GRISSOM-D-request@rootsweb.com
with the following text and no other text (turn off your signature): unsubscribe
Then send the message subscribe to the GRISSOM-L-request@rootsweb.com.
If you do not want to miss any messages while you're away, subscribe
to the DIGEST mode & then go back to regular mail mode, when you return.
If you need something specific in connection with the list,
or have some problem, send a message to me with GRISSOM in the subject
line. I will let the list know when I will be on vacation & during
that time, you will be given another name to contact in case of a list
problem.
Soooooo, welcome to the Grissom mailing list....Happy hunting....
