Some of the most serene, happiest and relaxing moments of my life have been while fishing. Whether hanging a line from old train trestles over the creeks of Pennsylvania as a child, fishing the lakes of Canada with inferior equipment, making lures from mess deck spoons in the Caribbean or wading the rivers of Virginia; fishing has never failed to be my joy. Perhaps the old Babylonia Proverb is true and "The gods do not deduct from man's allotted span the hours spent in fishing."

Fishing has almost always been a pastime that was undertaken alone or with a fellow who enjoyed company over a long hot day in the summer sun. Rarely did I have company during the days of spring rain, chilly fall evenings or blustery winter days. While fishing is a year round endeavor for me, it is mostly a fair-weather pastime for most anglers I know. Until of course, this past year.

Enter Shiro, stage...upstream! A tragic fishing accident involving her finger, a dog and a hook scared her for life. Thank goodness for a Dad with pliers and patience! Her finger would go to her mouth at the very sight of a single hook, and she would flat out run from a treble hook. Small or large, all hooks were the devil spawn and to be avoided at all cost. In her own words:

"As a young Air Force brat stationed in the Black Hills of South Dakota, my dad took us on several enjoyable camping & fishing excursions. I remember my sister and me spending hours on the shores of unnamed lakes and rivers fishing for that prize bass and getting a bad case of sunburn on our shoulders. One such adventure took place when several AF families decided to get together and have a group outing. One clan decided to bring all of their children and two of their dogs. While I was baiting my hook with a bit of "salmon egg" one of the dogs decided to weave its way around my sister and me and got himself tangled in my line. Being an animal lover, I didn't want the fish hook to gouge out the eyeball of the mangy cur so I held on to the hook. As bad luck would have it, the dog decided to take off after some imaginary vermin and took my line with it along with the fish hook...with me firmly grasping the hook! Needless to say the line broke, but the fish hook didn't and turned me into a human fish-kebob. I'm sure my parents thought my screaming infant days had returned when they heard my murderous shriek! My index finger extended straight out from my fist and my eyeballs popped out of their eyeholes. Mom came running to me first to inspect the catastrophe, then Dad raced toward me with his tackle box (I think it doubled as a toolbox as well). I heard Dad say that he would have to try to break the hook because the barbed end pierced through two sides of the pad of my index finger and he couldn't pull it through. Well, that just put me into an earsplitting frenzy as my mother practically sat on me to keep me still. She had to shield my eyes so I wouldn't become a whirling dervish as Dad pulled out a pair of wire cutters and pliers to do the operation. I thought Mom was going to break my arm as she held my limb straight out and tried to flip my hand so Dad could get at the hook; I'm sure it was quite a feat for a 4'10" woman weighing 85 pounds to hold down a frantic child as a large man tried to remove a hook lodged in her finger. After about 7 minutes, 10-hours to a frightened kid, the offending metal was removed, my finger was bandaged and I was sitting in the tent far away from dogs and hooks. And THAT, ladies and gentlemen, is my tragic folly with a finger, a dog and a fish hook!"

Shiro came upon the quite dedicated, dashing and debonair Dread Pirate one day, her fishy-hook past behind her. She braved the sight of a treble and fought the urge to sprint. Over time, she came to enjoy fishing again after exhibiting the utmost show of bravado and patience. (With the Pirate...not the hook!) Thus, Dread Pirate Fishing Team (DPFT, DPF or TEAM DP for short) was born.

Shiro and I began our fishing excursions with zeal. While not formally schooled in the various types of fishing, we believe this to be a boon and not a hindrance. You see, while others are fishing the proper way and not catching a thing...we are fishing all wrong and yet catching fish. We use the wrong small freshwater lure in brackish water and land 'em! Team DP is all about using unorthodox methods to find, catch and release fish. (Yes, we DO keep the occasional fish or three for dinner thank you!)

Dread Pirate Fishing Team Mission: Our passion is to motivate others and to fish any way they can. Our goal is to inspire and motivate others to fish through our images, our weblog, other websites, and motivational fish stories! We want to bring positively charged motivation to those in need, as well as those who desire to elevate their status in life as non-fisherman land lovers. Dread Pirate Fishing Team will use the Internet, as well as any other means necessary, to reach out and touch the sailor~of~life who desires to fish! We feel a need to help inspire those who have potential, but do not, or cannot, see it within themselves, all the while keeping our fishing secrets to ourselves!

Fish on... fish on!!!
