When has a car been driven into the ground? Barring accidents, there are a few valid reasons to buy a new (preferably used) car. Buy a new car when:

  1. The circumstances of your life no longer permit the degree of unreliability you may experience. (If you’re delivering babies or pizzas, you absolutely have to get there.)

  2. You wish to avail yourself of new technology, especially safety related items such as airbags or anti-lock brakes.

  3. The level of your fatigue or boredom with your present vehicle exceeds your cheapness. (It won’t happen for Dr. Dipstik, but other people have different mental health requirements.)

General Motors would prefer you didn’t do this calculation:
Whenever you consider buying a new car, add up the estimated annual string of payments to the bank including any interest, the additional insurance and tax expense. Compare that total to the average annual maintenance expense (total $ / number of years) for your old car that you’ve tabulated. (See Write It Down!)
