Change the brake fluid every other year. Moisture gathers in the fluid and changes its effectiveness.

Check the level of the brake fluid each time you check the oil.

Have your brakes inspected every 6 months, or so. If you replace the pads before they’re completely worn out and screeching like a game-show contestant, you’ll probably avoid the greater expense of replacing or machining the disks. The front brakes do 75% of the work so they wear out more quickly.

No simple rules can be made about mileage and brakes. It highly depends on the kind of driving you do - mostly highway, or mostly stop and go - and whether you have a lead foot. If all you get out of a set of brake pads is 20,000 miles, examine your life. You like deceleration too much. You could be getting close to 40,000 miles for an even mix of highway and city, if you were a better human being.
