DJ Dread Pirate is sailor behind the new genre, Nautical Techno. Several years ago I was introduced to the Techno, Electronic, Trance, & Rave genres. It was love at first bump. While most people credit Guru Moby for the Techno genre, I go back a few years further. If DJ’s like Moby and Micro etc. are given credit for its rebirth, I suggest that the genres forefathers were “new wave” musicians of the late 70’s and 80’s such as Gary Numan & The Cars, etc. Sure, today’s DJ’s have integrated true digital sound into the genre, but, it was songwriters like Gary Numan and Ric Otcasek that originally merged rock with synth-pop.
Being a huge fan of both Numan and The Cars, it was only natural that I fall in love with its evolutionary genres, Techno, Electronic, Trance, & Rave. After purchasing LimeLight by Topaz records, mixed by Gonzo, and after watching interviews of Gonzo and DJ Corbett, I realized the genre was nothing more than a musician, their PC/MAC and mixing board! I later learned that most of today’s best known DJ’s have never been formally educated in the art of music.
I have always wanted to make my own music, and after purchasing software for the quasi-related project of turning my ebooks into audio books, I realized that the software enabled me not only to record voice, but to create music as well. One night, I decided on the basic idea of what I wanted. Shipmate, it was all down hill from there. I consider my music outside of the normal accepted types of the aforementioned genres, but, a sub-genre none-the-less.
Nautical Techno is not what you may consider Techno. Some people would suggest that the work belongs in the New Age genre. I however, find the work to be fair winds cross between both Techno and New Age, leaning hard into the Techno wind. Thus, the choice of Nautical Techno over New Age prevailed. Remember, we are not speaking of Techno per say, I create Nautical Techno! My music is for relaxation, meditation, healing, and much more. In specific; it can be used for quieting your mind before sleeping, relieving intense stress, reducing chronic stress, free yourself from worry, and relaxing whenever you want.
My music is Nautical Techno.
Once you hear it, you will understand.

Description: This compilation is a continuous stream of Nautical Techno. It is an ocean voyage from dockside, to partying with the whales, and then the return trip home. This work is soft in flow, and gentle in movement, but has a solid Nautical Techno sound. My music is for relaxation, meditation, healing, and much more. In specific; it can be used for quieting your mind before sleeping, relieving intense stress, reducing chronic stress, free yourself from worry, and relaxing whenever you want. Great for background when you have guests, or just when you are kicking back thinking of the beach!

The live and very real ocean becomes a digital wonderland. It felt like falling asleep on the beach, morphing into a luxurious fantasy of sailing on a yacht then eventually riding the waves in space. A little redundant for some time, with real life wave teasers peeking in here and there. The hills and valleys were a bit sharp, leaving me a little dizzy. I wasn't so much dock side, as I was looking for the dock. I needed to land after seven minutes of this when suddenly the Techno drums take over and over . . . by the time I decided I wanted to dance, a "lariat" of rhythm started swooping and diving all over the place, becoming a confusion of clicks and drums until the tune smoothed out. There was an annoying back drop of "horse hoof" pounding that I could have done without. Techno doesn't have to be all about repetition of a vibe, but I'm finding that's what seems to be happening with On Deck Techno. This party gets a little kick, and I start to enjoy it only to realize that it's over too soon and suddenly I'm stranded on a raft, the hot sun baking me to a crisp and the slow rhythm of the raft is going to drive me insane with it's endless rocking to nowhere. Finally, I have to ask: Is this ship sinking? I begin to wonder, but DJ Dread redeems himself in a final catchy beat, with just enough personality and background to keep me interested. The redundancy of the last 30 minutes seems to disappear until the thumping goes on . . . and on . . . and . . . I want to turn it off, but I fast forward instead about four minutes to where the thumping appears to stop and the sound slips and slides into something else I can't quite identify when serenity finally captures me and I am led back to the beach with it's soothing sounds and the beauty of the waves. Essentially - - This is the CD I might pop in when the party is still raging at four aye em with no sign of stopping for a couple more hours, but a no go for the road trip. It's not a candidate for serious listening, but I wouldn't dismiss it's potential for a back drop when entertaining.

I have
to start by telling you I am not a big fan of Techno. But, I actually
liked the CD. I loved the sound of the sea as well. As I listened to it, I heard
words flowing through the notes and I could imagine singing. It was very good!
While I don’t have any other reference to compare to, it does seem to be unusual
in style. Haunting, yet reminded me of an emotion. Like you were falling, yet
flying. I felt the sea and travel flowing through it.
What are your plans for other styles when it comes to the future? I would love
to hear your next effort include voice. A woman singing, perhaps a haunting
style poem and one with a love song style would be great. It may not be something
you had in mind or will consider but it would add something deeper to your work.

I just recently received a copy of DJ Dread's new Techno CD. I have been listening for the better part of a week and have to say I am thrilled. It's relaxing, soothing and just simply music that makes me feel good. I love the sounds of the sea on the first track. The second and third make me wanna dance as I vacuum the living room...LOL All in all I would say it is an amazing CD that is truly the work of a wonderful artist. Nothing done by Dread Pirate can ever be dismissed as basement quality. He is one of the finest writers I know. In my humble opinion I think he can add DJ to his long list of talents. 5 stars, DP....You have a hit!!
I've
been listening to your CD, in fact I'm still listening to it. The more
I listen, the more I enjoy it. In fact I like it very much. Some Observations:
The surf & birds are a very nice opening.
1st song - Dockside - Nice opening tune, love the 'wave' feel
to the music, can 'see' the bobbing buoy on the horizon.
2nd - Underway - In addition to the waves & birds, I thought
I could hear/feel sails flapping. Very nice pure wood knocking sound, gives
this
one a vision of Natives dancing around the night fires on the Island Paradise.
3rd - Party With the Whales - Enjoy the secret Whale language
represented here & the BIG WHALE SOUND.
4th - Just Sailing - I felt/heard Sonar & the low Boom to the
Bottom of the Sea This one made me think of Capt. Jack Sparrow's, "Now Bring
me that Horizon." I saw a fast moving ship breaking waves & schools of fish,
fast swimming dolphins. I see sleek bodies working sails.
5th - Home to Foggy Bottom - Hurry Home.... Radio Waves...
Message Sir... Pulling into Port.
I see people on a dance floor & lots of flashing lights.

The sound of the ocean in On Deck Techno made me have to pee. The really cool thing is that it keeps pace with my workout! How did you do that?
