What is Down?
Down is the name given to the under plumage of waterfowl species such as geese and ducks. Down comes from the fluffy clusters on the bird's breast, underbelly, lower neck, and under the wing. This down is the substance which provides the bird an insulating barrier against subzero cold or the heat of southern climates. Feathers are the outer layer on a bird. An excess of feathers is undesirable in the insulating fill, because they add weight and do not possess the insulating qualities of down.
What is Fill Power?
The true test, relative to functionality and quality of down, is dictated by the fill power, or loft, that the Down creates. Fill power refers to the number of cubic inches occupied by one ounce of down. The higher the fill power, the higher the insulating capacity of the down per unit weight. 700 cubic inch fill power is superb, while 550 cubic inch fill power is very good
