Anyone who doubts the artistry of God should visit Northern Wisconsin and Michigan in the Fall. Here are some shots I've taken in the last few years. (NEW pictures added May 2002) Cool nights and sunny days set the stage for phenomenal fall color! |
It's worth setting the alarm early enough to watch the sun rise over a misty bog. This was the view from the Cross Trails, in Minocqua, where we spent many restful vacations. The Motel closed, and now we rent a cabin in Sayner - even MORE remote and restful! |
Another view from the motel parking lot. You don't see THIS in the "big city"! |
At night, the "locals" used to come up and visit at the sliding door of the motel room. |
We enjoyed feeding them and watching them for hours |
National and State forests line the highways, making it hard to keep your eyes on the road during peak color season. |
Waterfalls are abundant as you approach the Lake Superior watersheds. |
This famous one is BOND FALLS. You've probably seen it on some TV Beer commercials |
Clouds help accent the clear blue skies - with no pollution to dull the scene. |
One of our favorite activities is walking in the woods on a cool fall day. This is Pepper and our dear sweet Katrina, who passed to doggie-heaven in February 2001. |
This is Fallison Lake - a beautiful 3 mile trail leads around this pristine symbol of God's handiwork. This lake is part of a state forest, so there's no private land in site, and motorized watercraft are prohibited, keeping it quiet and serene. We heard a loon singing from this cove. |
Here's part of the trail leading to the lookout on Silver Mountain in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. We climbed 263 steps and several large rocks to reach the peak, but the view was worth it. |
Even on a cloudy day, it was impressive to see the virgin forests stretch as far as the eye could see. |
While hiking, we often get a chance to see unusual birds not native to Central Illinois. Here, Pepper watches two loons swimming on Clear Lake. |
Here's two RINGED GULLS on the motel roof. These guys were migrating from the arctic. |
This beautiful path is part of the Raven Cross-Country ski trail - but it was even more beautiful as a hiking trail this year. |
Even the REST AREAS are colorful! Here's one along Route 51 just north of Minocqua. |
Imagine RETIRING to this beautiful scene. A friend of ours, Dave Peters & family, plan to do just that. Here's the lakeside view from their lot. |
Fall Festivals are FUN! We enjoy Beef-a-Rama in Minocqua, which features local merchants competing in a cooking contest and then parading their roast beefs down main street in goofy costumes. Here's one of the parade participants. Everyone has a great time! |
Fall is also HARVEST time, and the cash crop in Northern Wisconsin is CRANBERRIES. Visitors are invited to tour the bogs and sample the delicious juice and wine. |
We never take a vacation from God. when 'up North', we worship at Shepherd of the Lakes Lutheran Church in Sayner Wisconsin. |
