| Yellow 44 was flown by Lilia
Litvyak. Unlike other countries, the Russians actively promoted
women pilots for front line combat. Lilia was killed in action August 1, 1943, but not before downing at least 12 German aircraft. In May of 1990 she was posthumously awarded the title "Hero of the Soviet Union" by President Mikhail Gorbachov.
