Dolphins also became a good luck charm for me as I engaged in my midwifery training. I bought a pair of silver earrings from a gypsy silversmith on a market stall and was assured that they would bring me good luck. I wore them for my first exam and I passed with flying colors. My friends and family heard about this and for my next exam, dolphins of all shapes and sizes arrive to wish me good luck. I passed that exam as well. You wouldn't believe the number of dolphins I received when I took my finals!
When I received the letter telling me that I had passed my finals with top marks my husband and I were so excited that we went straight away to buy the belt buckle. (This is a British tradition. All hospital staff at that time wore white dress uniforms and a belt of a color that designated what you were. Nurses wore white dresses with red belts, midwives wore the same dresses with navy belts. The buckle was optional but traditional.) When we got to the shop selling these silver buckles, the last one in the book had dolphins. Well, what other buckle could I have?
I felt that, as my skills in midwifery came to me as if by instinct, plus with my passion and fascination in dolphins, then what better name for my midwifery business than the Dolphin Midwifery Services.
