We are available to you by telephone, beeper or the emergency midwives' answering service 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. There are occasions when our beepers are out of range but you will always be told when that will be and how to contact us or a backup midwife should this occur. We always aim to be available during the period 2 weeks prior to your estimated due date until your baby is born. If a vacation has already been booked then you will be informed of this during our initial consultation.
Sometimes, we have to attend study days and conferences. These are necessary to keep up legal documentation and to be aware of latest research so that we may provide you with the best possible care. The timing of these is unavoidable, but necessary to attend. You will never be left without a midwife for backup. If you are in active labor at the time I should leave then I, of course, will stay. Most of these are close enough to get back to in case of emergencies.
We do our utmost to provide you with our best care. Please remember that this is a partnership. Between us, we can help you to achieve the pregnancy and birth experience that you wish for. You have taken the responsibility upon yourself to leave the more "conventional American hospital birth" for what you feel is the better care of a midwifery led pregnancy and birth. This responsibility will continue, throughout your pregnancy and birth, to keep yourself and your baby as safe and healthy as possible. If, at anytime we feel that you are jeopardising yourself or your baby against our advice, we may need to terminate our partnership and refund any payments owing to you.
