Block Island is about 12 miles off the coast of Rhode Island and a short trip by ferry for most landlubbers. We arrived in Old Harbor, an area we call the "dark side" of Block Island because it is the older, quieter, less commercial port. A step back in time.
We anchored inside the breakwater, a rare treat,
since the crowds were light, due to the weather. Here's an aerial photo of the breakwater. We anchored here, a stone's throw from the landmark National Hotel.
Pirates Arrival at Old Harbor
Kevin and Mark went ashore for ice, some sightseeing, and to play "man on the street" with our ship-to-shore radios, while Chris and I checked the status on the on-board refreshments.
The locals took turns grabbing the radio and saying "hi" to us over the radio and making excuses for Mark and Kevin's whereabouts. We shared a few chuckles. I think Mark
stopped somewhere to put the ice "on ice". We waited, patiently... Our ice wasn't melting very fast in the 70 degree weather.
We had a fabulous dinner at the National and headed back out to the boat for a quiet night on the water. Tomorrow would be a 6 to 8 hour sail to Cuttyhunk Island, up the Massachusetts coast toward Cape Cod, so we needed to get an early start.
