The Day That Firetalk Stood Still

On January 6, 2000, we were all saddened to learn that Jim Smith passed away. This page is being passed on to Jim's friends around the world, some of whom are just learning of Jim's passing. Please stop back and pass it on. The URL is:

http://home.att.net/~doctordialtone/csolddude.htm

Please take the time to sign the Guest Book to share your personal comments with all of us, as we mourn together on and off line. Thank you.

Jim, who had become a popular worldwide celebrity as a Customer Support Specialist for Firetalk, an Internet Chat program, was also know as CS ArchJim, and recently changed his nickname to CS OldDude to coincide with his 53rd birthday. He had become one of the more popular on-line personalities on Firetalk.

The smile in his voice, the twinkle in his eye, and his naturally helpful nature and unending patience instructing and counseling people in the Firetalk New Users Forums will be missed by the thousands and thousands of folks he helped daily.

His unmistakable voice was instantly recognizable by his growing on-line fan club.

As an example of his generosity, he even worked overtime over the recent Christmas and New Year 2000 holidays, just to allow his co-workers to have time off with their families.

His personal website reveals a side of Jim that many of his on line friends knew little about, a side that is consistent with his upbeat, carefree take on life.

Although his website is now off line, I have mirrored his site so you can meet him again, "up close and personal".

Note: I finished mirroring the site , so
many of his photos that were missing are now there.
Jim's ACTUAL site went officially off line forever.

Updates

This updatecomes from Melinda, a close friend and neighbor of Jim's for many, many years:

"We scattered Jim's ashes outside the Golden Gate Bridge on Saturday, January 22. We went out on a fishing boat the 'Eddie Bob'.

"His son James and James' sister Danna and mother Terry came along with friends Derrick, Janice, Jeanie, Glynda, and myself (Melinda).

"Jeanie and James read from the book 'The Prophet' , by Kahlil Gibran, which was a favorite of Jim's, then we scattered his ashes along with roses, carnations and finally I threw his top hat into the sea.

"Thank you for your lovely tribute. I really miss him."

We do too, Melissa...

Any new information will be posted here as it becomes available.

Success

He has achieved success who has lived well, laughed often and loved much; who has gained the respect of intelligent people and the love of little children; who has filled his niche and accomplished his task; who has left the world better than he found it whether by an improved poppy, [an enlightened friend], or a rescued soul; who has never lacked appreciation of earth's beauty or failed to express it; who has always looked for the best in others and given the best he had; whose life was an inspiration, whose memory a benediction.

~Bessie Anderson Stanley~ in 1904

Friends

There are people who can't be forgotten,
Friends who are so much a part
Of all that you've done,
Of all you've become --
They'll always be close to your heart.

Anyone can carry his burden, however hard, until nightfall.
Anyone can do his work, however hard, for one day.
Anyone can live sweetly, patiently, lovingly,
purely till the sun goes down.
And this is all that life really means.

~Robert Louis Stevenson~

There are only two ways to live your life.
One is as though nothing is a miracle.
The other is as though everything is a miracle.

Here's a health to the company, and one to my lass.
   Let's drink and be merry all out of one glass.

I Did Not Die

Arch Jim

Do not stand at my grave and weep;
I am not there. I do not sleep.
I am a thousand winds that blow;
I am the diamond glints on snow;
I am the sunlight on ripened grain;
I am the gentle autumn's rain.

When you awaken in the morning's hush,
I am the swift uplifting rush
Of quiet birds in circled flight.
I am the soft star that shines at night.
Do not stand at my grave and cry.
I am not there; I did not die.

"And when the earth shall claim your limbs,
then shall you truly dance. "

* Excerpt from one of Jim's favorite books, "The Prophet",
which was read at his memorial ceremony.

And though you want to last forever,
You know you never will,
You know you never will,
