Major General William S. Rosecrans
"It is my duty to notice the services of those faithful officers who have none but
myself to mention them.
To Major-General Thomas, the true soldier, the prudent and undaunted commander, the
modest and incorruptible patriot, the thanks and gratitude of the country are due for his
conduct at the battle of Chickamauga."
Henry M. Cist quoted from the official report of Major General William S. Rosecrans,
U.S. Army, commanding the Army of the Cumberland at Chickamauga.
General Rosecrans always gave credit to his officers when justified. Had General
Grant and General Sherman given but half the proper credit to George Thomas that he earned on
and off the battlefield, perhaps his example of courage and devotion to duty would not
have been lost to succeeding generations of our nation's children.
