I have an old copy of the 1882 printing of the Life of Major General George H. Thomas published in New York by Charles Scribner's and Sons, and have enjoyed reading it. As a Canadian with an interest in American history, I found the maps in the book very interesting. I first heard about General Thomas in 1958; my eighth-grade teacher, Sister Petronilla, O.S.B., (St. Bridget School, Minneapolis, MN) told a few of us kids after our graduation that her name was Agnes Thomas before she became a nun, that she was from Virginia, and that she was related to the General (but I don't remember what the relationship was). She did mention that Gen. Thomas was considered the black sheep of the family because though a Virginian he fought for the Union. Sister was elderly in 1958, and a fine teacher.
If you have any clues to how Sister Petronilla was related to General Thomas, I would very much like to know.

My great-great grandfather served under General George Henry Thomas at Stones River, Chickamauga and Chattanooga . He was with the 19th Illinois Inf. He was proud to be one of "Thomas' boys" and stood with him at Snodgrass Hill and went up Missionary Ridge. My mother who is a student of the Civil War considers him one of the greatest generals of that conflict. He needs more recognition. We appreciate this website.

My ggrandfather served under Thomas with the Army of Ohio and then the 14th Corp. of the Army of the Cumberland. He served in the 10th IN Inf. I think Thomas is the unsung hero of the Civil War. Had Grant and Sherman liked him, history would have him right next to them.

Nice site, for a figure almost written out of history because of political correctness (at least he was on a five dollar bill!). Much of my knowledge of him is emotional, as he was my great grandmother's father. (Ida Thomas Richart). It was a massive contradiction being a southern republican was raised in CA. and I never understood the sadness associated with the stories told, until I was quite mature.
As a child I thought he was a confederate soldier like Ida's husband and his brothers in Memphis. Evidently he was always referred to as Captain Thomas, or Big shot, by his daughter, and subsequent family. I never asked why as a child, especially since my grandmother was a little dramatic in that southern style.

My name is Carter Pittman. My great-grandmother's maiden name was Lelia Thomas. She was one of General George Thomas's "bitter sisters." I grew up with tales of her keeping his photo turned toward the wall and calling him the "traitor." I do not share her sentiments, however. I realize and respect the great amount of courage and conviction it took for him to do what he felt was right even though it would forever alienate him from all of those he loved. I am saddened that the bitterness between him and my grandmother was never resolved. I am proud of his accomplishments and am also proud to be his great-nephew. As far as the bitterness goes, it stopped with me and my children will be proud of their great, great uncle.

The best I have seen on George Henry Thomas
I am somehow related to George Henry Thomas and also related
to William Stark Rosecrans. Everything told to me is only
hearsay now, as all written documents and photographs were
lost many years ago in a fire. As a child I can remember several
large photographs of the two Generals hanging on the walls
of my grandparents home. Grandmothers maiden name was Lucy
Rosecrans, Grandfathers name was Moses Thomas. Anything on

I found in my ancestor's pension file, that after the war he reenlisted in the Calvary and was sent to General Thomas's headquarters in Nashville and was there for a time before being sent on the Indian Campaign. He was a farrier.

A fine web site for a long neglected general. His firm leadership at Stone's River and Chickamauga prevented major Union disasters. His contributions to to the Union successes at Chattanooga and in the Atlanta campaign have been neglected. If Sherman had listened to Thomas that campaign may have ended in May at Snake Creek Gap. Finally, it's sad and ironic that Thomas' reward for his decisive victory at Nashville was to be stripped of most of his infantry (the 16th and 23rd corps) by Grant. In their respective memoirs, Grant and Sherman continued to deride Thomas for being slow and defensive minded. Unfortunately Thomas died early and never wrote in his own defense.

dismayed when I read Grants Memoirs to find him "dogging" Thomas throughout

Grandfather, James Wesley Woodard Co "K"
of the 60th Illinois fought most of his time in the war under the leadership
of General Thomas in the Army of the Cumberland and thank goodness, with the
exception of the "skirmish" at Buzzard Roost, Ga. in Feb '64, where James was
seriously wounded, my forebearer survived the war and the March to the Sea! I
believe his survival at least partially the result of General Thomas' superior
leadership!

I am City Clerk of Fort Thomas, Kentucky, a lovely residential Northern
Kentucky community perched atop the hills overlooking the Ohio River, adjacent
to Cincinnati, Ohio. Our City was named for Gen. George H. Thomas and we are
very proud to carry on his name and history with various events and open
houses at our small Military History Museum in Tower Park. Our only artifact
is his dress uniform sash, which is lovingly framed and hanging on the wall.
We also have a copy of some documents with his signature, and a few pictures.
Our next Open House is Sun., Nov. 18, 2001 (2-5 P.M.) and we will again try to
make the children of our community (as well as other visitors) acquainted with

the battle quiet well. I have developed a reverent respect for Gen. Thomas
while studying Chickamauga, I only wished he had fought for the South, he
would have gotten the respect he so justly due him. I do think he was a great
general and leader, but I also think he was a true hero and gentleman.

Thomas, born in Coventry, VT. I am not sure of the details but he was the
nephew (or perhaps the grand-nephew?) of the General. I'm not sure how such
relationships are classified.

In any event, at one point an uncle of mine tracked down the genaeology and

Mary Walker was given the MOH because after the war she demanded a pension for
her services. Rather then give her a pension that she didn't deserve, she was
given the medal to shut her up. (The requirements to receive it during the
civil war were far less stringent then they are today). It was properly revoked
and should have stayed that way. It was reinstated for political reasons by
gutless politicos.

A great site for a much maligned general officer. The Snake Creek Gap episode
is given its due. Had Thomas been allowed to move against Johnston's rear, a
much different outcome would have resulted, a fact that is pretty common
knowledge now, thanks to the notes cited in your site and other current
authors to whom you point. You might also include McMurry's fine Atlanta 1864,
which also tells the Thomas story in that campaign. Grant and Sherman are
here, as elsewhere nowadays, shown up for what they were, petty, jealous,
political animals who, far from being the heroes of legend, are seen to have
contributed to the length of the war and the extent of its casualties. I'll

After years of reading about the Civil War, I realized that the "heroes"
touted by the historians, especially Grant and Sherman, simply were not
adequate on their own to account for the Union's victory over the Confederacy.
I began to realize that the real heroes of the Union, men like G. Gordon
Meade, John Gibbon, and especially George Henry Thomas were overlooked and
even unfairly denigrated by historians of the 1920s, '30s and '40s in favor of
creating some kind of cult of personality around Sherman and Grant.
It's encouraging to see that Old Slow Trot is not forgotten. Nor should he
ever be. He was one of the first modern citizens of this nation, who realized
that the United States is! Not the United States are.

George H Thomas was simply the most important general to serve in the ACW. His innovations changed military thinking and tactics forever. What Grant called the "slows" and criticized Thomas for was actually preparation. And of the kind and extent unknown to the Union head general. On the Union side, most attention focuses on the Army of the Potomac, because they fought Lee and were close to New York and Washington, where the major newspapers were, or on the Army of the Tennessee, because they seem to most fit that rough, tough frontier image we Americans are so fond of. But my favorite has always been the Army of the Cumberland and its leader, George H. Thomas. I once read somewhere that Sherman said that if Thomas had commanded the troops he faced, he never would have gotten to Atlanta. Most of Sherman's command, roughly three-fifths I believe, was Thomas's Army of the Cumberland. There also is no event more remarkable in that war, in my opinion than when Thomas's men, supposed to stop at the first defensive line, went right on up the cliffs of Missionary Ridge. Comparable to it is only the Rangers at Pointe du Hoc in World War II, and they were specially trained elite troops.

I am aware that Gen Thomas did not have children, but several members of my family as well as myself look a great deal like Gen. Thomas. In addition our family came from the same area of Virginia. Would you have any information about other members of Gen. Thomas's family. My great-great grandfather was George Henry Thomas, and I can't find any information further back. I am also an admirer of Grant, not because he was always right, but because he was a flawed person who grew personally, and who also made great contributions with a different type of determination. Comments:: Just wanted to say you have done an outstanding job on this site. I started doing some research on "old pap" in the last couple of years when a fiend of mine, Rudy Ayoroa, an artist and sculptor from my hometown of Danville, Ky did a painting and sculpture of Thomas. The statue is in a square in Lebanon, Ky where Thomas had his headquarters for a short time. Rudy also did a painting of Thomas at Chickamauga that I own. As someone who majored in history, I'm really impressed with the bibliography section and the fact that I can find some of the books I've been looking for on Thomas. Thank you. David Perry

Comments:: My ggg grandfather Gideon C. Moody in 1861, soon after the beginning of the Civil War, Messrs. Milroy and Moody raised the Ninth Indiana Infantry,Of which Mr. Milroy was made Col, Mr. Moody becoming captain of Company G. On Nov.15, 1862 was promoted colonel, and soon afterward was mustered out of the service in order that he might accept a post of Captain in the Nineteenth United States Infantry, a command in which he served until the spring of 1846, the greater portion of the time on the staff of Gen. George H. Thomas. In May 1864 his term of enlistment having expired, and it being apparent the the war was nearing its end, he resigned his commission in the army and was appointed by the secretary of the war to proceed the Dakota terr. Please, if it is at all possible would supply any information of Captain Moody's service records.

Comments:: Retirement has enabled me to research some ancestral Civil War History, which has focused my interest on General Thomas. My grandfather's uncle died on the field at Resaca under Thomas with the 88th Indiana Infantry Vols. After about my sixth book it appears plain that the War was won in the West, and that Thomas' role was the most critical one played. Thus, if he had not saved the Rosecrans army at Chickamauga, then probably Chattanooga would have been lost, then Atlanta would never have taken place, then Lincoln probably would not have been reelected, etc. The sad part is, though now a satisfied resident of Virginia, the State has never recognized Thomas' greatness. Something should be done about that, I am thinking.

Comments:: Hello. Thanks for the great page. I have been a Thomas fan for many years. In fact a very good friend of mine is doing research for a book on Thomas. We visited the Thomas grave, in the Kellogg plot, in Troy, NY this last July.; My friend sees Thomas' performance, at Chickamauga, as one of the few major decisive moments of the war. Had Thomas not held and Rosecrans not given time to form a defensive line at Chattanooga, the Federals would have been fofced backacross the Tennessee River towards Nashville. This would have meant another campaign to take Chattanooga, and another Tullahoma. This would take time, time which would mean that Sherman's campaign for Atlanta, and it's subsequent capture. If this had been delayed past the November elections, the outcome of those elections would have speculative at best. See ya.

Comments:: Gen Thomas was born just outside the little town of Newsoms, VA,my home town. His home place was restored a few years ago, but is a private residence not open to the public. Local folklore has it that, when Gen Thomas elected not to join his native state in the great rebellion, his mother turned his portrait around so that it faced the wall and never saw his face again. This may or may not be true, but sure makes a good story. Southampton County gave the war another fine general--Billy Mahone of Crater fame.
