"Tinos, island of religious faith, beauty and art. The lovely bride of the Cyclades, as it has been called by travelers and scholars. It is the homeland of great painters, sculptors and poets who have ornamented it, in tandem with the inventiveness and dexterity of its many anonymous folk craftsmen."

View from the gallery of the Church of the Evangelismos Theotokou

There are over 750 churches on Tinos, and 600 of them are small country chapels.

We visited the large Church of the Annunciation, as well as one of the few Roman Catholic Churches on the island.

The village of Pyrgos is one of the  most beautiful on Tinos. It is an outdoor architectural museum in its own right. The streets and walks are marble, the street signs are sculpted by the gifted artisans of the island... even the small homes display some sort of unusual and lovely touches.

Pyrgos

Within the valleys between the mountains and hills are hundreds of ancient dovecotes.  They are everywhere.  Their style is unique, the principal characteristic being the triangular shape of the openings and the lacey stone and plaster decoration.

showing us how he does it Babis Kritikos is a well-known and critically acclaimed sculptor who lives on Tinos, in a house he built himself over a period of several years. He is Eleni's friend, and he was kind enough to have us in  his home and workshop for an afternoon.  Babis' studio
