KM Overview

Introduction

©   Fred Nickols  2000

In May of 1998, at the request of a client, I conducted a search of the Internet for information peratining to knowledge management.  That search resulted in a sizable collection of materials in a three-ring binder, an executive-level KM briefing book. A little more than a year later, I was asked to update the original KM briefing book.  One thing led to another and what I eventually developed was a prototype KM resource web site.  With my client's blessing, I am placing selected portions of that KM briefing book here on my web site.

The main sections of this updated KM briefing are accessible via the links below.

  6. Knowledge Management: What's It All About?

The original search was launched in hope of finding answers to the following questions:

  • Technologies
What is there beyond Lotus Notes?
  • Exemplars
Who are the leading large companies? Who might serve as benchmarks?
  • Applications
What are the "real" applications of knowledge management?

The goal was to shed some light on practical knowledge management issues; for example: "How do we share knowledge and information across the whole company, so everyone has access, so the product manager in London can see what a product manager in Malaysia did last year with a particular product marketing program?"

Today, almost 18 months after the original search, answering the questions above still begins with the two terms at the heart of the matter: knowledge, and knowledge management.
