PROMENADE
The promenade usually begins with couples in the middle of the set with the woman on the right of her partner.
Couples join hands in a promenade hold.
Promenade hold: rights hands in right, left hands in left (i.e. hands crossed in front with right hands above left hands) - arms away from body about waist height - man uses his right hand to lead.
Basically, the couples just go “walk about” back to place - there is no progression.
In a two couple promenade there is less distance to cover and thus more time to get around than in a 3 or 4 couple promenade (likewise there’s more time for 3 cpl than 4 cpl promenade) and the timing is adjusted for this.

3 1st cpl DANCE ACROSS THE SET AND TURN DOWN the man’s side (2s follow)

6 1st cpl DANCE UP as 2nd cpl dance in toward the middle
7 both cpls DANCE UP AND BEGIN TO DANCE OUT
8 both couples DROP HANDS AND DANCE DIAGONALLY OUT to original places.
Another way to describe the 2 cpl promenade:
directions for 1st cpl (2nd cpl follows):
on 1 out towards woman’s side of dance, on 2 turn to face across the dance, on 3 across to man’s side, on 4 dance down the dance, on 5 turn in toward the center, and 6 thru 8 dance up the center to original places.
3 cpls Promenade

Another way to describe the 3 cpl promenade:
1st cpl, followed by 2nd and 3rd cpls, dance out to the right on bar 1, turn and across the dance on bar 2, across and turn to dance down the men’s side on bar 3, dance down the men’s side on bar 4, dance down and be turning into the center on bar 5 and dance up the middle bars 6 thru 7 and dance out to places on bar 8. (To make it work property, 1st cpl comes into the center no later than bar 5).
Note: when a 3 cpl promenade begins from the side lines, the first step is used to dance in to meet partner and face up.

Same as 3 cpl EXCEPT 1st cpl turns on the 1st step towards the men’s side of the dance and on the fourth is dancing into the middle, leaving 5, 6, 7 and 8 to lead up to places.
NOTE: notice that on 2 and 3 cpl promenades 1st cpl turns into the middle on bar 5 while on the 4 cpl promenade the 1st cpl turns into the middle on bar 4. Also notice that on 2 cpl and 3 cpl begin by stepping out to the right but not so on a 4 cpl promenade.
