UNUSUAL (OR RARER) FIGURES

Birl or Bourrel

First man and second woman set to each other advancing and turn three quarters with two hands and on bar four they release hands and pivot around to finish back to back in the center, man facing down and woman facing up (both pull by by right shoulder) WHILE their partners (first woman and second man) dance across the set and continue counterclockwise around them to finish facing partner (four bars) then all set to partner and turn right hands (four bars)

The Espagnole

First and second woman lead across the set (right hand in right) to the men’s side then the women change places (second woman passing in front of first woman) WHILE their partners pass them on the outside to dance to the woman’s side (2 bars)

THEN the men lead across back to their own side and change places (second man passing in front of first man) WHILE their partners pass them on the outside to dance across the set back to their own side (2 bars)

NEXT Second couple turn once around with right hands while first couple turn once around with left hands

La Barette (The Churn)
man and woman are on the wrong side usually at the start of this figure:
They turn halfway round with right hand and keep right hands joined with arms almost fully extended (2 bars)
THEN they join left hands and the man passes the lady in front of him (she’s going under the raised left arms) (2 bars)
and they keep left hands joined and change places (the hook)
note: this figure is very like some swing dance moves for those who are swing dancers!

Petronella turn

it's done with a pas de bas step and takes 2 bars of music (1, 2, 3 and 2, 2, 3)
first you place the right foot diagonally to the right about 1 1/2 feet and take weight on it
you bring the left foot in front take weight on it and go back down on the right foot
then you pivot on the right foot and take weight on the left foot so that you're now facing the wall that was to your left originally
bring the right foot in front and take weight and then back down on the left foot -

Petronella in Tandem
Two dancers are standing side by side, man with woman on his right. Using skip change of step (in reels and jigs):
Woman does a Petronella turn as usual, but moves a bit farther on than usual. Meanwhile, the man does a Petronella turn, dancing closely behind her to start and finishing on the left side of the woman. (2 bars)
