CORNERS
CORNER FORMATIONS IN REEL, JIG AND STRATHSPEY TIME
formation requires three couples
with 2nd couple in first place, 3rd couple in third place and
1st couple standing back to back in the middle facing the opposite side;
in this position first corners are on the 1st couple’s right
and second corners on their left.
This means that for the FIRST CORNER position
1st woman faces 2nd man and 1st man faces 3rd woman so forming a diagonal line. For SECOND CORNER position
the 1st woman faces 3rd man and1st man faces 2nd woman,
again forming a diagonal line.(see diagram)
TURN CORNERS AND PARTNER
eight traveling steps in eight bars of music;
hands in handshake hold at shoulder height with elbows down
1-2 1st couple turn first corners with right hand
3-4 1st cpl turn each other with left hand to face second corners
5-6 1st cpl turn second corners with right hand
7-8 give left hands, 1st cpjl cross to own side of dance in second ple
CORNER CHAIN
1-2 1st cpl change places with first corners giving right hands.
1st corners are now in the middle facing each other
3-4 1st corners turn with left hand to finish facing 1st cpl who are in 1st corner positions
5-6 1st cpl change places with first corners giving right hands.
1st cpl are now in the middle facing each other
7-8 1st cpl turn each other with left hand to face 2nd corners
Note: This formation is usually repeated with 2nd corners,
but with 1st cpl crossing to own side on the last two bars.
SET TO AND TURN CORNERS
In reel/jig time: each setting steps (pas de basque)
In strathspey time: two setting steps and two traveling steps for each corner
eight steps in eight bars of music
when turning hands are joined at shoulder width and height
1-2 1st cpl set to 1st corners
3-4 using both hands: 1st cpl turn corners once round.
1st corners finish in place, 1st cpl fisish back to back in middle of set facing 2nd corners
5-6 1st cpl set to 2nd corners
7-9 using both hands, 1st cpl turn 2nd corners.
2nd corners finish in place
1st cpl finish on own side lines between corners
SET TO CORNERS
four setting steps in four bars of music
1 1st cpl set to first corners
2 1st cpl while setting on left foot to first corners,
pull back left shoulder as they begin to move round to face 2nd corners
3-4 1st cpl set to 2nd corners
Note: the completion of this formation on bar 4 can differ from the above
depending on the formation which follows.
SET TO CORNERS AND PARTNER (HELLO-GOODBYE SETTING)
eight setting steps in eight bars of music
1 1st cpl set to 1st corners
2 1st cpl, still setting to first corners,
pull back the right shoulder to face partner
(1st cpl are now on the side lines between their corners facing each other)
3 1st cpl set to each other
4 1st cpl, pulling back the right shoulder, dance into the middle of the set to finish back back, facing 2nd corners
5 1st cpl set to 2nd corners
6 1st cpl, still setting to second corners, pull back the right shoulder to face partner
(1st man is now between 2nd cpl facing down and 1st woman beteen 3rd cpl facing up)
7-8 1st cpl dance into 2nd place on their own side, pulling back the right shoulder.
In strathspey time, the seventh step can be modified to become a traveling step.
Note: The completion of this formation can differ from the above
depending on the formation which follows.
