Sinking of HMAS Perth November, 2001
Gracious Grey Lady Down
In King George Sound at Albany in Western Australia...
...At 0800 on 24 November 2001, several explosions rang out.
The bottom was ripped out of the battle-hardened HMAS Perth...
...and She sank swiftly to the bottom in a matter of minutes.
The Ship is currently sitting up on the bottom with about 5 metres of the TACAN aerial above water. So, visiting Perth Shipmates and others can snorkel around the ship as well as dive on and in her. The scuttling is a very scientific affair in order for the ship not to roll or porpoise underwater.
