PLAN OF THE DAY, 12 MAY, 1969
I don't know about anyone else, but it is the minutia of everyday life that
serves to flesh out my recollections of our time aboard NN. On our previous trip to Yoko I remember being terribly cold, with uniform of the day not allowing gloves, and of course we couldn't put our hands in our pockets! The prices for electronics were surprisingly high, much higher than Hong Kong, and one or two drinks at a decent bar could just about level your (my) wallet. (K Kier NN 66-69)
The plan of the day shows several members of my division that worked Shore Patrol in Japan. I remember trying to bring back a Japanese Sword while on liberty, only to have it confiscated a main gate by the Marine guards! Losing the sword was a shame, cause it was pretty expensive and it would have made a great souvenir. That same night, I meet a sailor (team mate) who played baseball on the same team as I did from my home town. Amazing that I could be thousands of miles away from home and yet meet people that I grew up with, from my home town! PS. For a while I worked in the Chiefs Mess as mess cook prior to being assigned to E Division! (D Burt NN 68-72)
