Newport News Shipmates visited West and, by special permission, East Berlin in 1963.

REMEMBRANCES: An Army Ranger Captain and his Sargent drove us through Check Point Charlie in a mini-bus. Some NN Crew members with high security ratings were not allowed to go. The official purpose of our trip was to visit the beautiful WWII Cemetery where Russian and American military were Memorialized. The looks of despair on the East German faces as we rode back to the Check Point are as chilling today as then.

I also took that tour to West Berlin and went on that mini bus to East Berlin. We had a great flight from Kiel to Berlin and the Army did take us on a great tour to East Berlin. I remember also the Garden of Rememberance. Thanks again for bringing those memories back.

A Memorial to a couple shot on this spot by East German guards from the rooftops above. They apparently escaped over (through?) the sealed-up East Berlin buildings but died on West Berlin ground. The chain between the Wall and Memorial marks the East-West Border. (Photo by D Goad)
