wurzburg01.jpg (3768 bytes) Festung (Fortress) Marienberg - The hill that seats the Fortress Marienberg has a history that dates back to earlier than 1000 BC, where the Celts created a surrounding wall to facilitate their cult rituals. The Franks took over in the 6th century. The same site became home to one of the earliest Christian churches North of the Alps. For the next thousand years, it developed into a massive stronghold, home to bishop princes, and suffered many sieges and rebellions. It was finally conquered in 1731. It was subsequently refortified and extended further by new inhabitants until its current shape and yet another "goldmine" of antiquity and examples of many centuries past.
