Too little or too grand? It's difficult to estimate the scale of your topper from a website photo!

Above:
Under 6.5 inches the topper is considered a miniature, but for a smaller cake, this is the perfect statement.  Both of the miniature toppers above are just over six inches in height, but the photos are deceiving.  Tiny toppers can have "mini" sized figurines (at left) or regular sized figurines (at right) and still measure 6 inches.

If a miniature topper has a regular sized couple, it can be built higher onto the cake with the help of a rounded Styrofoam piece to look like a larger topper.  The piece is then frosted over to look like the cake, which is an old baker's trick to establish height.  The additional layer can then be surrounded by real flowers or frosting flowers for additional color and style, while the bottom layer of the cake is cut for your ceremony and the top false layer is never touched.  Your baker should only charge you for the real cake layers...

cake topper heights

If your topper is over 10 inches, it is a large topper and will be a grand focus of your cake. A foot high topper at 12 inches is fabulous, at one foot high it can be the focal point of the room. Between 8 to 10 inches, the topper is still a large display.  Most toppers from the 1950's fit into this category, with their flower arches and sugar bells.

Check your topper's measurements and refer to the main photo above for size comparison. Images courtesy of vintagecaketopper.com
