1933  Listen to the lullaby of old Broadway.

When a Broadway baby says "Good night,"
It's early in the morning.
Manhattan babies don't sleep tight until the dawn:

Good night... baby,
Good night...
milkman's on his way!
Sleep tight... baby,
Sleep tight...

let's call it a day!

1930's Mercury Glass Beaded coronet is created from two layers of stiffened, starched buckram and an 11 inch spine headband.  All work was likely done in a cottage industry workshop located in Bavaria, (Czechoslovakia) or in Europe, (Belgium or France)

Mercury glass, also known as silvered glass, contains neither mercury nor silver. It’s actually clear glass, coated on the inside with a silvering formula.  Exposure to air causes oxidation of the silvered inner surface, so naturally after 70 years most of the mercury glass beads available today have faded. Some people, however, actually prefer pieces with a crumbly, deteriorating coating as it gives a vintage feel.  The beads on this headpiece still have a glint of silver that catches the light but have faded to a silver grey.

Two small combs are attached at the inside of the headband to help secure the piece to the head.  The headpiece measures 1" on the lower sides and 2.25" at the center top in height.

The buckram is almost completely covered in hand stitched beadwork and is cut into interlocking arches with an interesting center flourish that showcase a center heart. Hundreds of hand sewn white round beads edge the cutwork design.  The channels of the design have small mercury glass beads that were originally silver but have now faded to grey.  A center sweetheart shape is accented with clear and bright diamante and additional diamante is at the side risers and flourish ends.  The diamante are prong set and japanned (black settings)  All stones are clear and bright.

This item is an authentic, original 1930's Art Deco Coronet.   It is approximately 70 years old.  The buckram headpiece is in excellent deadstock condition and extremely clean, but the mercury beads have alternatively faded and darkened.

If an item isn't in very good condition, we will state this plainly and without embellishment.

We will never describe an item to make it appear better than it actually is.
