Desert Gold Diggers

DGD Outing to "Rough as a Cob" on 6 Dec 2008

This months outing was held at our claim in Pinal County, right by the town of Kearney. Rough As A Cob is aptly named for the roads are very rough in spots.

We had 29 members and 4 guests make the trip for the outing. At 8:00 am sharp we headed to the claim. After a short meeting detailing the days events, Lonny Ripplinger started them into the claim.

A variety of tools to get at the gold were used including wet re-circulators and dry washers along with just gold pans. This is a tough claim to figure out as the best areas required are a fair walk to get to. But there was a lot of small gold found most places in the lower part of the claim.

I set up an area in which to have the monthly hunt for the six dollar coins that you can exchange for a nugget at the following months general meeting. I also put out pocket change just to keep people interested. I never heard of any of the coins being found, but if there were, be sure and bring them in to the January meeting.

Lonnie and I drove as far as we could to the end of the claim to see how the monsoon had affected the claim. We saw a lot of erosion in the canyon but still quite a few good areas to work further up the claim. Also spotted the ancient wall art in a couple of spots which is really neat.

Next month will find us back at Stevens Shadow claims west of Tucson on Sunday, January 11, 2009. We will meet east of Hwy 186 on the Caballo Loco Road, about a half mile east of mile marker 5, at 8:00 a.m. sharp. For those of you that like to camp there is an RV park three miles further east on this road and full hook ups are available for rent. Hope to see everybody at the next meeting and out on the outing next month.
