Desert Gold Diggers

DGD Outing at "Try Your Luck" on 7 December 2003

Two months in a row mother nature has smiled upon our meetings. It was a beautiful warm December day of which one could not ask for any better. Twenty-two members and 1 guest made up the outing group this month. We departed the meeting point at exactly 8:00 a.m. and drove 20 minutes or so the "Can You Dig It" claim. The hot main wash was quickly attacked with pick and shovel as hungry miners yearn to extract its hidden treasure of gold. Most diggers were using dry washers which are very efficient during this dry period. One particular member did not get much prospecting done because his drywasher motor decided to break down at the most inopportune time. At least one group was using a recirculating sluice. The gold gods were not very kind to our outing group and relinquished very little fine gold this day.

Many members brought their metal detectors and were trying their luck nugget shooting. The area is strewn with rotten and milky quartz and really looks promising as a nugget producing area. It is not known if any of the nugget hunters were successful in their search. Although the pickings appeared to be slim, everyone enjoyed being out in the great outdoors and away from the noisy hustle and bustle of everyday city living.
