Desert Gold Diggers

DGD Outing at "Try Your Luck" on 10 February 2002

There was a good attendance with over two dozen people, including a few guests. The road was good up to the first turnoff to the claim. Taking this turnoff, it was only about a half mile further to where everyone parked. There was plenty of parking and vehicles were parked along the big wash and around the area. This last half mile required high clearance but not necessarily 4WD.

Lonny set up the club's machine down in the wash and started the common dig. Kenny Delventhal, Jerry Schultz and Ken Winter joined Lonny on the common dig while some guests watched on. This produced a little bit of gold but not as much as hoped. Lonny does a great job getting the club machine in and out of these places. Carter Thoenes, Richard Wilt and Ray Knights selected spots in the wash and set to doing some panning. Some gold was found but less than usual.

Jack Stephenson and Gene Doe set up one of the small battery powered dry washers in a spot Jack found with his Falcon probe in a very small wash next to the main wash. A bit of gold was recovered with one piece that was almost a picker. They reported that this little dry washer worked pretty well.

Several people, including George Volker, Dick Baty, Wes and Gerri Morey and Carl Gemberline grabbed their metal detectors and spread out to find those elusive gold nuggets. Wes was testing out a new Fisher Gold Strike detector. Unfortunately lots of metal was found but no one reported finding any nuggets.

Since not a lot of gold was being found, some of the members quit a bit early and took a drive to the nearby ghost town of Las Guijas. Even though a bit windy, it was a nice sunny day for doing a little prospecting as well as sightseeing.
