INDUCTIVE BIBLE TOPIC STUDY
JESUS AS PROPHET, PRIEST & KING
By Dennis Schmidt 3/2007
RETURN TO THE: BIBLE PAPERS HOME PAGE
This paper discusses Jesus in His prophet, priest, and king ministries. He alone
fulfilled all these ministries. The Judah tribe was the kingly tribe while the
Levi tribe was the priestly tribe. Jesus was from the tribe of Judah, but was
still a priest after the order of Melchisedec. Jesus
is king over a kingdom that is eternal, invisible (exists now in Christians),
and future (1000 year reign). All scriptures are from the King James' version
Bible.
INDUCTIVE COMMENTS:
THEME: Jesus is a
prophet, priest, and king. God
reveals secrets to His church by the Holy Spirit (John 16:13). They
occur in God's timing proving that Jesus is a true Prophet. Jesus intercedes to the Father on our
behalf (Romans 8:34 & Hebrews
7:25). He once
for all paid the true sacrifice (Hebrews 10:10)
for our sins. Jesus is eternally king. He was rejected (1 Samuel 8:7), but He
will be king again in the new earth (Revelation 21 & 22).
Zechariah 6:13
"Even he shall build the temple of the LORD; and he shall bear the
glory, and shall sit and rule upon his throne; and he shall be a
priest upon his throne: and the counsel of peace shall be between them
both." Jesus is a priest from the kingly tribe of Judah.
PURPOSE: What is a prophet

1 Samuel 9:9 "(Beforetime
in Israel, when
a man went to inquire of God, thus he spake, Come,
and let us go to the seer: for <he that is> now <called> a
Prophet was beforetime called a Seer.)"
John 8:28 "Then said
Jesus unto them, When ye have lifted up the Son of man, then shall ye know

Micah 5:2 "But thou, Bethlehem
Ephratah, though thou be little among the thousands of
Judah, yet out of thee shall he come forth unto me that is to be ruler
in Israel; whose goings forth have been from of old, from
everlasting." Jesus is God of eternal Spirit born in Bethlehem of
Judah in the flesh.

on his thigh a name written, KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS."

IX) JESUS IS PROPHET,
PRIEST, AND KING:
I) PROPHET:
What is a prophet and how did Jesus fulfill the ministry? A spokesman for
another as for God. Other names/titles in the Bible are as follows: Man
of God; Servant of the Lord; Messenger of the Lord; & Seer. Jesus was God's
(Father) spokesman.
Amos 3:7-8 "Surely the Lord
GOD will do nothing, but he revealeth his
secret unto his servants the prophets.{8} The lion
hath roared, who will not fear? the Lord GOD
hath spoken, who can but prophesy?"
1 Samuel 9:9 "(Beforetime
in Israel, when a man went to inquire of God, thus he spake,
Come, and let us go to the seer: for <he that is> now <called> a
Prophet was beforetime called a Seer.)"
John 8:28 "Then said
Jesus unto them, When ye have lifted up the Son of man, then shall ye know
that I am <he>, and <that> I do nothing of myself; but as
my Father hath taught me, I speak these things."
II) TRUE & FALSE
PROPHETS TESTS: Jesus fulfilled all the true tests.
A) SPOKE ONLY IN THE NAME
OF THE LORD (YAHWEH):
John 14:10 "Believest thou not that I am in
the Father, and the Father in me? the
words that I speak unto you I speak not of myself: but the Father that dwelleth in me, he doeth the works."
B) HIS LIFE MATCHES HIS
POSITION:
John 8:46
"Which of you convinceth me of sin? And
if I say the truth, why do ye not believe me?"
C) SIGNS AND WONDERS MAY
PROVE HIS POSITION:
Deuteronomy 13:1-3 "If
there arise among you a prophet, or a dreamer of dreams, and giveth thee a sign or a wonder, {2} And the
sign or the wonder come to pass, whereof he spake
unto thee, saying, Let us go after other gods, which thou hast
not known, and let us serve them; {3} Thou shalt not hearken unto the words
of that prophet, or that dreamer of dreams...." The other test must be
true also.
John 14:11
"Believe me that I am in the Father, and the Father in me: or else
believe me for the very works' sake." Jesus
miracles.
2 Thessalonians 2:9
"<Even him>, whose coming is after the working of Satan with all
power and signs and lying wonders,"
D) HIS MESSAGE WAS IN
HARMONY WITH PREVIOUS REVELATION:
Matthew 1:22
"Now all this was done, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken of
the Lord by the prophet, saying, {23} Behold, a virgin shall be with
child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name
Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us." Jesus was born of
virgin-Mary & is God with us (Luke 1:34-35).
Acts 3:18
"But those things, which God before had showed by the mouth of all his
prophets, that Christ should suffer, he hath so fulfilled."
Jesus suffered & died for us (Isaiah 53).
E) HISTORY WILL CONFIRM
HIS AUTHENTICITY:
Deuteronomy 18:21-22 "And
if thou say in thine heart, How shall we know the word which the LORD hath
not spoken? {22} When a prophet speaketh in
the name of the LORD, if the thing follow not, nor come to pass,
that <is> the thing which the LORD hath not spoken, <but> the
prophet hath spoken it presumptuously: thou shalt not be afraid of
him."
Matthew 12:40 "For as
Jonas was three days and three nights in the whale's belly; so shall the
Son of man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth."
Matthew 27:63 "Saying, Sir,
we remember that that deceiver said, while he was yet alive, After three days I will rise again."
Luke 24:21-23 "But we
trusted that it had been he which should have redeemed Israel:
and beside all this, to day is the third day since these things were done.
{22} Yea, and certain women also of our company made us astonished, which were
early at the sepulchre; {23} And when they found
not his body, they came, saying, that they had also seen a vision of
angels, which said that he was alive."
F) MORAL QUALITY AND
SPIRITUAL ESSENCE OF THE MESSAGE:
Romans 5:21
"That as sin hath reigned unto death, even so might grace reign
through righteousness unto eternal life by Jesus Christ our Lord."
Jesus came to give us eternal life (John 11:25,
14:6).
Titus 2:14 "Who gave
himself for us, that he might redeem us from all iniquity, and purify
unto himself a peculiar people, zealous of good works." Jesus
came to redeem us & change us to his children.
G) INNER WITNESS TO THE
HOLY SPIRIT BELIEVER:
See my paper: "Holy Spirit
Baptism" for more
information on this subject.
Romans 8:16
"The Spirit itself beareth witness with our
spirit, that we are the children of God:" Christians know their His.
1 John 4:13 "Hereby know we that we dwell in him, and he in us,
because he hath given us of his Spirit."Christians have God inside.
III) JESUS FULFILLED
PROPHET SCRIPTURES:
Deuteronomy 18:18 "I
will raise them up a Prophet from among their brethren, like unto thee,
and will put my words in his mouth; and he shall speak unto them all that
I shall command him."
Matthew 21:46
"But when they sought to lay hands on him, they feared the multitude,
because they took him for a prophet."
Luke 7:16
"And there came a fear on all: and they glorified God, saying, That a great prophet is risen up among us; and, That
God hath visited his people."
John 4:19
"The woman saith unto him, Sir, I perceive that thou art a
prophet."
John 6:14
"Then those men, when they had seen the miracle that Jesus did,
said, This is of a truth that prophet
that should come into the world."
IV) SOME OF JESUS'
PROPHESIES:
See my paper: "Jesus in the
Old Testament" for
more information on this subject.
Luke 9:22
"Saying, The Son of man must suffer many
things, and be rejected of the elders and chief priests and scribes,
and be slain, and be raised the third day."
Luke 19:41-44 "And when he
was come near, he beheld the city, and wept over it, {42} Saying,
If thou hadst known, even thou, at least in this thy
day, the things which belong unto thy peace! but now
they are hid from thine eyes. {43} For the days shall come upon thee,
that thine enemies shall cast a trench about thee, and compass thee
round, and keep thee in on every side, {44} And shall lay thee even with the
ground, and thy children within thee; and they shall not leave in thee
one stone upon another; because thou knewest not
the time of thy visitation."
John 13:11
"For he knew who should betray him; therefore said he, Ye are not all clean."
V) PRIEST:
A servant of the people before God. He ministers sacrifices to
God. He is from the Levi tribe. One priest is chosen to serve as the high
priest for one year. He alone goes into the Holy of Holies to offer the
sacrifice on the day of atonement. See
my paper:" Melchisedec/Melchizedek" for
more details.
VI) JESUS IS A PRIEST
AFTER THE ORDER OF MELCHIZEDEK:
Genesis 14:18
"And Melchizedek king of Salem
brought forth bread and wine: and he was the priest of the most high God." Salem=Peace
Psalms 110:4 "The LORD hath
sworn, and will not repent, Thou art a priest for ever after the order of
Melchizedek." Spoke of Jesus.
Hebrews 5:10
"Called of God an high priest after the order
of Melchisedec." Hebrews 5:6 also.
Hebrews 7:1-3 "For this Melchisedec, king of Salem, priest of the
most high God, who met Abraham returning from the slaughter of the kings,
and blessed him; (3) Without father, without mother, without
descent, having neither beginning of days, nor end of life;
but made like unto the Son of God; abideth
a priest continually." Jesus alone is eternal without beginning or end
of life, both king/Priest. Melchisedec has always
existed and still performs priesthood tasks.
1 Timothy 2:5 "For there is
one God, and one mediator between God and men, the
man Christ Jesus;" A High Priest duty was to mediate.
Hebrews 7:25
"Wherefore he is able also to save them to the uttermost that come
unto God by him, seeing he ever liveth to make intercession for them." Jesus
intercedes for us to God the Father. The Levitical
priesthood is inferior to Melchisedec priesthood.
Hebrews 7:11-13 "If
therefore perfection were by the Levitical
priesthood, (for under it the people received the law,) what further need
was there that another priest should rise after the order of Melchisedec, and not be called after the
order of Aaron?" {12} For the priesthood
being changed, there is made of necessity a change also of the law. {13} For he of whom these things are spoken pertaineth to another tribe, of which no man gave
attendance at the altar."
2 Chronicles': The king tried to sacrifice. God judged this evil. Jesus, of Judah
tribe as Melchisedec priest, replaced Aaron priest.
Hebrews 7:14
"For it is evident that our Lord sprang out of Juda; of which tribe Moses spake
nothing concerning priesthood."
2 Chronicles 26:18-19 "..said unto him,..not
unto thee, Uzziah, to burn incense unto the
LORD, but to the priests the sons of Aaron,..leprosy even rose up in his forehead
before the priests.."
Hebrews 7:15-16 "And it is
yet far more evident: for that after the similitude of Melchisedec
there ariseth another priest, {16} Who is made, not
after the law of a carnal commandment, but after the power
of an endless life." Melchisedec priesthood, is not of law, but power approved
by God.
Hebrews 7:17-20 "For he testifieth, Thou art a priest for ever after the order
of Melchisedec. {18} For
there is verily a disannulling of the commandment going before for the weakness
and unprofitableness thereof. {19} For
the law made nothing perfect, but the bringing in of a better hope
did; by the which we draw nigh unto God. {20} And inasmuch as not
without an oath he was made priest:" Levitical
priesthood annulled due to weakness and sin. Jesus priesthood is a better hope.
God made oath for his priesthood.
Hebrews 7:21 "(For those
priests were made without an oath; but this with an oath by
him that said unto him, The Lord sware and
will not repent, Thou art a priest for ever after the order of Melchisedec:)" As quoted from Psalms
110:4, Jesus was a priest long before the nation of Israel
and the Levitical system began.
Hebrews 7:22-24 "By so much
was Jesus made a surety of a better testament. {23} And they truly were many priests, because they
were not suffered to continue by reason of death: {24} But this man,
because he continueth ever, hath an unchangeable
priesthood." Priests die.
Jesus priesthood continues forever & is unchangeable.
Hebrews 7:25
"Wherefore he is able also to save them to the uttermost that come
unto God by him, seeing he ever liveth to make intercession for them."
Hebrews 7:26 "For such an
high priest became us, who is holy, harmless, undefiled,
separate from sinners, and made higher than the heavens;" Not like Levitical
priest who as sinners offered daily sacrifices that resulted in only temporary
forgiveness. Jesus, sacrificed himself once, for a
permanent forgiveness. Now he can plead for us from a position of authority in
the highest heaven.
Hebrews 7:27-28 "Who needeth not daily, as those high priests, to
offer up sacrifice, first for his own sins, and then for the people's:
for this he did once, when he offered up himself. {28} For the law maketh men high
priests which have infirmity; but the word of the oath, which
was since the law, maketh the Son, who
is consecrated for evermore."
VII) JESUS FULFILLED
PRIEST SCRIPTURES:
Zechariah 6:13
"Even he shall build the temple of the LORD; and he shall bear
the glory, and shall sit and rule upon his throne; and he shall
be a priest upon his throne: and the counsel of peace shall be between them
both."
Hebrews 2:17 "Wherefore in
all things it behoved him to be made like unto his
brethren, that he might be a merciful and faithful high priest in things
pertaining to God, to make reconciliation for the sins of the people."
Hebrews 4:14-15 "Seeing
then that we have a great high priest, that is passed into the heavens, Jesus
the Son of God, let us hold fast our profession. 15 For we have not an
high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities;
but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin."
Hebrews 5:4-6 "And no
man taketh this honour unto
himself, but he that is called of God, as was Aaron. {5} So
also Christ glorified not himself to be made an high priest; but he that
said unto him, Thou art my Son, to day have I begotten thee.
{6} As he saith also in another place, Thou art a
priest for ever after the order of Melchisedec."
Hebrews 6:20
"Whither the forerunner is for us entered, even Jesus, made an high priest for ever after the order of Melchisedec."
Hebrews 8:1-2 "Now
of the things which we have spoken this is the sum: We have such an high
priest, who is set on the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in the
heavens; {2} A minister of the sanctuary, and of the true
tabernacle, which the Lord pitched, and not man."
Hebrews 9:12-14 "Neither
by the blood of goats and calves, but by his own blood he entered in
once into the holy place, having obtained eternal redemption for us. {13}
For if the blood of bulls and of goats, and the ashes of an heifer
sprinkling the unclean, sanctifieth to the purifying
of the flesh: {14} How much more shall the blood of Christ, who through
the eternal Spirit offered himself without spot to God, purge your conscience
from dead works to serve the living God?"
Hebrews 9:26
"For then must he often have suffered since the foundation of the world:
but now once in the end of the world hath he appeared to put away sin by the
sacrifice of himself."
VIII) KING: A ruler of man (earthly) or mankind
(heavenly). God rules through other people as well as himself. God appoints all
rulers.

thou God in heaven? and rulest
<not> thou over all the kingdoms of the heathen? and
in thine hand <is there not> power and might, so that none is able to
withstand thee?"
Daniel 4:25 "That they
shall drive thee from men, and thy dwelling shall be with the beasts of
the field, and they shall make thee to eat grass as oxen, and they shall
wet thee with the dew of heaven, and seven times shall pass over thee, till
thou know that the most High ruleth in the kingdom of
men, and giveth it to whomsoever he will."
Nebuchadnezzar experience from God.
Daniel 4:35
"And all the inhabitants of the earth <are> reputed as nothing:
and he doeth according to his will in the army of heaven, and

IX) JESUS IS PROPHET,
PRIEST, AND KING:
He reveals secrets to His church by the Holy Spirit (John 16:13). They
occur in God's timing proving His that He is a true Prophet.
Jesus intercedes to the Father on our behalf (Romans 8:34 & Hebrews 7:25). He once for all paid the true
sacrifice (Hebrews 10:10) for our
sins. Jesus is eternally king. He was rejected (1 Samuel 8:7), but He will be
king again in the new earth (Revelation 21 & 22).
