Paul writes to Titus to ordain elders to teach truth since there will be false teachers coming even out of the church to steal away the flock.

Acts 20:28-30 "Take heed therefore unto yourselves, and to all the flock, over the which the Holy Ghost hath made you overseers, to feed the church of God, which he hath purchased with his own blood. {29} For I know this, that after my departing shall grievous wolves enter in among you, not sparing the flock. {30} Also of your own selves shall men arise, speaking perverse things, to draw away disciples after them."

I) SALUTATION: {TITUS 1:1-4}

WHO: PAUL

Titus 1:1 "Paul, a servant of /\ God /\, and an apostle of M Jesus M T Christ T, according to the [ faith ] of /\ God's /\ elect, and the acknowledging of the truth which is after godliness;"

Paul:

Paul: Saul: means asked for and Paul: means little or small. Paul is in Rome in prison and certainly needs the comfort and help of Onesimus, but he care for the church is of more importance. He does ask for pray and that a room be set aside from Philemon so that he could come to Philemon's home (verse 22). Paul was never in Colosse.

Servant of God: Paul uses servant as Titus 2:9 also except of God.

1 Peter 2:16 "As free, and not using <your> liberty for a cloak of maliciousness, but as the servants of God."

Apostle:

See my paper: "Apostles" for more information on this subject.

An Apostle is one sent by God, with power of attorney and authority, to act (with power) in place of sender. He was chosen and ordained to the position to be a witness of what God shows him.

Apostles started many churches and appointed Elders to the church.

Acts 5:12 "And by the hands of the apostles were many signs and wonders wrought among the people; (and they were all with one accord in Solomon's porch."

Acts 14:23 "And when they had ordained them elders in every church, and had prayed with fasting, they commended them to the Lord, on whom they believed." Apostles were to ordain elders.

1 Corinthians 9:1-2 "Am I not an apostle? am I not free? have I not seen Jesus Christ our Lord? are not ye my work in the Lord? {2} If I be not an apostle unto others, yet doubtless I am to you: for the seal of mine apostleship are ye in the Lord."

Faith:

See my paper: "Faith" for more information on this subject.

Hebrews 11:1 "Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen." Faith is not the same as hope. Hope is wishing for something. Faith is having it in a faith dimension.

When God reveals (manifests) it to this dimension is up to Him. We are to believe, when we pray, that the answer has already occurred. Future prayers are thanksgiving and praise for God's gift we have.

God's elect:

See my paper: "Is Free Will Biblical?" for more information on this subject.

See my paper: "Some Saved and Some Lost God's Sovereignty" for more information on this subject.

See my paper: "God Plans for His Purpose. Who Harden Pharaoh's Heart?" for more information on this subject.

God sovereign purpose to call and predestine a person. God chosen him, before the earth's foundation, for his purpose. God did not choose him by seeing in the future some good in him. This would mean he was saved according to the person's good works, but God's grace (unmerited flavor) was the reason.

Romans 9:11 "(For <the children> being not yet born, neither having done any good or evil, that the purpose of God according to election might stand, not of works, but of him that calleth;)"

Ephesians 1:4-5 "According as he hath chosen us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before him in love: {5} Having predestinated us unto the adoption of children by Jesus Christ to himself, according to the good pleasure of his will,"

1 Peter 1:2 "Elect according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, through sanctification of the Spirit, unto obedience and sprinkling of the blood of Jesus Christ: Grace unto you, and peace, be multiplied."

Titus 1:2 "In [ hope ] of eternal life, which /\ God /\, that cannot lie, promised before the world began;"

Hope: Wishing and desire. Not knowing for sure. Depending upon.

Romans 5:4-5 "And patience, experience; and experience, hope: {5} And hope maketh not ashamed; because the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us."

Romans 8:24-25 "For we are saved by hope: but hope that is seen is not hope: for what a man seeth, why doth he yet hope for? {25} But if we hope for that we see not, <then> do we with patience wait for <it>."

Only one wife. Wives death or Matthew 19:9 maybe only exceptions.

See my paper: "Marriage, Divorce, & Remarriage" for more information on this subject.

Genesis 2:24 "Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh." One flesh (person) not two people with separate purposes.

Mark 10:9 "What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder." Asunder = separate

1 Timothy 3:2 "A bishop then must be blameless, the husband of one wife, vigilant, sober, of good behaviour, given to hospitality, apt to teach;" Bishop (male only) is a husband.

Titus 1:7 "For a bishop must be blameless, as the steward of /\ God /\; not selfwilled, not soon angry, not given to wine, no striker, not given to filthy lucre;"

Bishop: (= overseer = elder from 1 Peter 5:1-2 and Acts 20:17, 28)

1 Timothy 3:1 "This <is> a true saying, If a man desire the office of a bishop, he desireth a good work."

1 Peter 2:25 "For ye were as sheep going astray; but are now returned unto the Shepherd and Bishop of your souls."

Blameless: Do all the correct things, spotless & righteousness.

Selfwilled: He should be God willed.

Given to wine:

1 Timothy 3:3 "Not given to wine, no striker, not greedy of filthy lucre; but patient, not a brawler, not covetous;"

1 Timothy 5:23 "Drink no longer water, but use a little wine for thy stomach's sake and thine often infirmities." Paul is telling Timothy to use a little wine because water quality is poor.

No striker: Not getting into fights. Peace loving.

Given to filthy lucre: Lucre = money

1 Timothy 6:10 "For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows."

Titus 1:8 "But a lover of hospitality, a lover of good men, sober, just, holy, temperate;"

Temperate: Moderate, restrained and reasonable.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

WHAT: SOUND DOCTRINE - EXHORT / CONVINCE

Titus 1:9 "Holding fast the faithful word as he hath been taught, that he may be able by sound doctrine both to exhort and to convince the gainsayers."

By sound doctrine:

Matthew 24:24 "For there shall arise false Christs, and false prophets, and shall show great signs and wonders; insomuch that, if it were possible, they shall deceive the very elect."

Acts 20:30 "Also of your own selves shall men arise, speaking perverse things, to draw away disciples after them."

Romans 16:17 "Now I beseech you, brethren, mark them which cause divisions and offences contrary to the doctrine which ye have learned; and avoid them."

Galatians 1:6-7 "I marvel that ye are so soon removed from him that called you into the grace of Christ unto another gospel: {7} Which is not another; but there be some that trouble you, and would pervert the gospel of Christ."

Ephesians 4:14 "That we <henceforth> be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, <and> cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive;"

Colossians 2:8 "Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ."

2 Timothy 3:16-17 "All scripture <is> given by inspiration of God, and <is> profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: {17} That the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works."

2 Timothy 4:3 "For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears;"

Titus 2:7 "In all things showing thyself a pattern of good works: in doctrine showing uncorruptness, gravity, sincerity,"

Hebrews 13:9 "Be not carried about with divers and strange doctrines. For it is a good thing that the heart be established with grace; not with meats, which have not profited them that have been occupied therein."

2 John 1:9-10 "Whosoever transgresseth, and abideth not in the doctrine of Christ, hath not God. He that abideth in the doctrine of Christ, he hath both the Father and the Son. {10} If there come any unto you, and bring not this doctrine, receive him not into your house, neither bid him God speed:"

Convince the gainsayers: A person who opposes (contradicts) word.

III) OFFENDERS IN THE CHURCH: {TITUS 1:10-16}

Titus 1:12 "One of themselves, <even> a prophet of their own, said, The Cretians <are> alway liars, evil beasts, slow bellies."

Cretians <are> always liars, evil beasts, slow bellies:

Proverb from Paul's days. This is not a quote from Old Testament scriptures.

WHY: SOUND IN THE FAITH

Titus 1:13 "This witness is true. Wherefore rebuke them sharply, that they may be sound in the [ faith ];"

WANT: NOT HEED JEWISH FABLES & COMMANDMENTS OF MEN

Titus 1:14 "Not giving heed to Jewish fables, and commandments of they may be sound in the men, that turn from the truth."

Jewish fables:

See my paper: "Questions & Answers on Law, Faith, & Liberty" for more information on this subject.

The Pharisees made 613 laws to protect the people from breaking God's true laws. See Titus 3:9.

Titus 1:15 "Unto the pure all things <are> pure: but unto them that are defiled and unbelieving <is> nothing pure; but even their mind and conscience is defiled."

Unto the pure all things are pure:

1 Timothy 4:4 "For every creature of God <is> good, and nothing to be refused, if it be received with thanksgiving:"

Defiled and unbelieving is nothing pure...conscience is defiled:

Unto every good work reprobate: Key Text is Titus 3:8

See also good works in Titus: 2:7, 2:14, 3:1, 3:8, & 3:14.

IV) DUTIES OF VARIOUS CLASSES: {TITUS 2:1-10}

WHAT: SPEAK SOUND DOCTRINE

Titus 2:1 "But speak thou the things which become sound doctrine:" Doctrine = teachings. See also Titus 1:9 & Titus 1:13.

WHY: SOUND IN FAITH WAY: BE SOBER, IN CHARITY

Titus 2:2 "That the aged men be sober, grave, temperate, sound in [ faith ], in charity, in patience."

Aged men:

WAY: TEACHERS OF GOOD THINGS

Titus 2:3 "The aged women likewise, that <they be> in behaviour as becometh holiness, not false accusers, not given to much wine, [ teachers ] of good things;" False accusers (gossiping) = slanderers.

Aged woman:

1 Timothy 2:9-10 "In like manner also, that women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with shamefacedness and sobriety; not with broided hair, or gold, or pearls, or costly array; {10} But (which becometh women professing godliness) with good works."

1 Timothy 5:5-10 "Now she that is a widow indeed, and desolate, trusteth in God, and continueth in supplications and prayers night and day. {6} But she that liveth in pleasure is dead while she liveth. {7} And these things give in charge, that they may be blameless. {8} But if any provide not for his own, and specially for those of his own house, he hath denied the faith, and is worse than an infidel. {9} Let not a widow be taken into the number under threescore years old, having been the wife of one man, {10} Well reported of for good works; if she have brought up children, if she have lodged strangers, if she have washed the saints' feet, if she have relieved the afflicted, if she have diligently followed every good work."

WAY: TEACH - SOBER & TO LOVE HUSBANDS / CHILDREN

Titus 2:4 "That they may [ teach ] the young women to be sober, to love their husbands, to love their children,"

Love their husbands, to love their children:

See my paper: "Man's Relationship with his Wife, Family, & Friends" for more information on this subject.

1 Timothy 5:14 "I will therefore that the younger women marry, bear children, guide the house, give none occasion to the adversary to speak reproachfully."

Ephesians 5:25 Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it; Equally true for woman.

Ephesians 6:4 "And, ye fathers, provoke not your children to wrath: but bring them up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord."

Titus 2:5 "<To be> discreet, chaste, keepers at home, good, obedient to their own husbands, that the word of /\ God /\ be not

blasphemed."

Obedient to their own husbands:

See my paper: "Submission/Subjection" for more information on this subject.

1 Corinthians 11:3 "But I would have you know, that the head of every man is Christ; and the head of the woman <is> the man; and the head of Christ <is> God."

1 Corinthians 14:34-36 "Let your women keep silence in the churches: for it is not permitted unto them to speak; but <they are commanded> to be under obedience, as also saith the law. {35} And if they will learn any thing, let them ask their husbands at home: for it is a shame for women to speak in the church. {36} What? came the word of God out from you? or came it unto you only?"

Ephesians 5:22-24 "Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as unto the Lord. {23} For the husband is the head of the wife, even as Christ is the head of the church: and he is the saviour of the body. {24} Therefore as the church is subject unto Christ, so <let> the wives <be> to their own husbands in every thing."
