Another prophet of the time was Joel which was written to Judah. Jeremiah 49:7-22 has parallel most of the scriptures in Obadiah 1-9. They both could have used a common reference. All scriptures are from the King James' version Bible.

Proverbs 16:18   "Pride goeth before destruction, & an haughty spirit before a fall."

OUTLINE FOR OBADIAH

I) INTRODUCTION: {OBADIAH 1:1}

II) JUDGMENT PHOPHESIED: {OBADIAH 1:2-9}

III) JUDGMENT REASONS: {OBADIAH 1:10-14}

IV) JUDGMENT RESULTS: {OBADIAH 1:15-16}

V) JUDGMENT VICTORY FOR ISRAEL: {OBADIAH 1:17-21}

ESAU’S DESECENDANTS & HISTORY:

Esau's grudge is against Israel because Jacob cheated him of the birthright:

Genesis 27:41 "And Esau hated Jacob because of the blessing wherewith his father blessed him: and Esau said in his heart, The days of mourning for my father are at hand; then will I slay my brother Jacob."

God rejected Esau:

Genesis 25:23 "And the LORD said unto her, Two nations <are> in thy womb, and two manner of people shall be separated from thy bowels; and <the one> people shall be stronger than <the other> people; and the elder shall serve the younger."

Malachi 1:2-3  "I have loved you, saith the LORD. Yet ye say, Wherein hast thou loved us? Was not Esau Jacob's brother? saith the LORD: yet I loved Jacob, {3} And I hated Esau, and laid his mountains and his heritage waste for the dragons of the wilderness."

Romans 9:10-13  "And not only this; but when Rebecca also had conceived by one, even by our father Isaac; {11} (For the children being not yet born, neither having done any good or evil, that the purpose of God according to election might stand, not of works, but of him that calleth;) {12} It was said unto her, The elder shall serve the younger. {13} As it is written, Jacob have I loved, but Esau have I hated."

PROPHETS:

Vision: A revelation from God.

Numbers 12:6 "And he said, Hear now my words: If there be a prophet among you, <I> the LORD will make myself known unto him in a vision, <and> will speak unto him in a dream."

Prophet: A spokesman for another, as for God. Other names/titles in the Bible are as follows: Man of God; Servant of the Lord; Messenger of the Lord; and Seer (to see).

Exodus 7:1-2 "And the LORD said unto Moses, See, I have made thee a god to Pharaoh: and Aaron thy brother shall be thy prophet. {2} Thou shalt speak all that I command thee: and Aaron thy brother shall speak unto Pharaoh, that he send the children of Israel out of his land."

Jeremiah 1:7 "But the LORD said unto me, Say not, I <am> a child: for thou shalt go to all that I shall send thee, and whatsoever I command thee thou shalt speak."

1 Samuel 9:9 "(Beforetime in Israel, when a man went to inquire of God, thus he spake, Come, and let us go to the seer: for <he that is> now <called> a Prophet was beforetime called a Seer.)"

TRUE & FALSE PROPHETS TESTS:

- Spoke only in the name of the Lord (Yahweh).

- His life matches his position. He did not practice divination.

- Do not assume signs and wonders prove his position.

Deuteronomy 13:1-3 "If there arise among you a prophet, or a dreamer of dreams, and giveth thee a sign or a wonder, {2} And the sign or the wonder come to pass, whereof he spake unto thee, saying, Let us go after other gods, which thou hast not known, and let us serve them; {3} Thou shalt not hearken unto the words of that prophet, or that dreamer of dreams: for the LORD your God proveth you, to know whether ye love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul."

2 Thessalonians 2:9 "<Even him>, whose coming is after the working of Satan with all power and signs and lying wonders,"

- His message was in harmony with previous revelation.

- History confirms his authenticity.

Deuteronomy 18:21-22 "And if thou say in thine heart, How shall we know the word which the LORD hath not spoken? {22} When a prophet speaketh in the name of the LORD, if the thing follow not, nor come to pass, that <is> the thing which the LORD hath not spoken, <but> the prophet hath spoken it presumptuously: thou shalt not be afraid of him."

- Moral quality and spiritual essence of the message.

- Inner witness to the Holy Spirit believer.

1 Corinthians 14:29 "Let the prophets speak two or three, and let the other judge."

Jeremiah parallel:

Jeremiah 49:16 "Thy terribleness hath deceived thee, <and> the pride of thine heart, O thou that dwellest in the clefts of the rock, that holdest the height of the hill: though thou shouldest make thy nest as high as the eagle, I will bring thee down from thence, saith the LORD."

Pride of thine heart hath deceived thee:

Proverbs 16:18 "Pride <goeth> before destruction, and an haughty spirit before a fall."

Obadiah 1:4 "Though thou exalt <thyself> as the eagle, and though thou set thy nest among the stars, thence will /\ I /\ bring thee down, saith the /\ LORD /\."

Thou exact thyself as the eagle...I bring thee down saith the Lord:

Isaiah 14:13 "For thou hast said in thine heart, I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God: I will sit also upon the mount of the congregation, in the sides of the north:" Just like Satan's statement of pride.

See my papers: "Born with Sin/Father is Devil (Prior to Rebirth)" for more information on this subject.

See my papers: "Apostasy" for more information on this subject.

Jeremiah parallel:

Jeremiah 49:22 "Behold, he shall come up and fly as the eagle, and spread his wings over Bozrah: and at that day shall the heart of the mighty men of Edom be as the heart of a woman in her pangs."

Obadiah 1:5 "If thieves came to thee, if robbers by night, (how art thou cut off!) would they not have stolen till they had enough? if the grapegatherers came to thee, would they not leave <some> grapes?"

Robbers by night..till they have enough..leave some graphs:

Jeremiah 49:9 "If grapegatherers come to thee, would they not leave <some> gleaning grapes? if thieves by night, they will destroy till they have enough."

WHY: How are <the things> of Esau searched out

Obadiah 1:6 "How are <the things> of [ Esau ] searched out! <how> are his hidden things sought up!"

Jeremiah parallel:

Jeremiah 49:10 "But I have made Esau bare, I have uncovered his secret places, and he shall not be able to hide himself: his seed is spoiled, and his brethren, and his neighbours, and he <is> not."

Obadiah 1:7 "All the men of thy confederacy have brought thee <even> to the border: the men that were at peace with thee have deceived thee, <and> prevailed against thee; <they that eat> thy bread have laid a wound under thee: <there is> none understanding in him."

Obadiah 1:8 "Shall /\ I /\ not in that [ day ], saith the /\ LORD /\, even [ destroy ] the wise <men> out of [ Edom ], and understanding out of the mount of [ Esau ]?"

Wise men out of Edom:

Job 4:1 "Then Eliphaz the Temanite answered and said," (wise men)

Jeremiah 49:7 "Concerning Edom, thus saith the LORD of hosts; <Is> wisdom no more in Teman? is counsel perished from the prudent? is their wisdom vanished?"

WAY: To the end that every one of the mount of Esau may be cut off by slaughter

Obadiah 1:9 "And thy mighty <men>, O Teman, shall be dismayed, to the end that every one of the mount of [ Esau ] may be cut off by slaughter."

Teman: Esau

Jeremiah 49:20 "Therefore hear the counsel of the LORD, that he hath taken against Edom; and his purposes, that he hath purposed against the inhabitants of Teman: Surely the least of the flock shall draw them out: surely he shall make their habitations desolate with them."

III) JUDGMENT REASONS: {OBADIAH 1:10-14}

WHY: For <thy> violence against thy brother Jacob thou shalt be cut off for ever

Obadiah 1:10 "For <thy> violence against thy brother [ Jacob ] shame shall cover thee, and thou shalt be cut off for ever."

For thy violence against thy brother Jacob..thou shalt be cut off:

Numbers 20:14 "And Moses sent messengers from Kadesh unto the king of Edom, Thus saith thy brother Israel, Thou knowest all the travail that hath befallen us:"

Numbers 20:17-18 "Let us pass, I pray thee, through thy country: we will not pass through the fields, or through the vineyards, neither will we drink <of> the water of the wells: we will go by the king's <high> way, we will not turn to the right hand nor to the left, until we have passed thy borders. {18} And Edom said unto him, Thou shalt not pass by me, lest I come out against thee with the sword."

Joel 3:19 "Egypt shall be a desolation, and Edom shall be a desolate wilderness, for the violence <against> the children of Judah, because they have shed innocent blood in their land."

WHEN: In the day thou stood on the other side & strangers carried away captive

Obadiah 1:11 "In the [ day ] that thou stoodest on the other side, in the day that the strangers carried away captive his forces, and foreigners entered into his gates, and cast lots upon Jerusalem, even thou <wast> as one of them."

Strangers carried away captive:

Amos 1:6 "Thus saith the LORD; For three transgressions of Gaza, and for four, I will not turn away <the punishment> thereof; because they carried away captive the whole captivity, to deliver <them> up to Edom:"

WHAT: But thou looked of thy brother that he became a stranger & rejoiced over the children of Judah in the day of their destruction

Obadiah 1:12 "But thou shouldest not have looked on the [ day ] of thy brother in the [ day ] that he became a stranger; neither shouldest thou have rejoiced over the children of Judah in the [ day ] of their [ destruction ]; neither shouldest thou have spoken [ proudly ] in the [ day ] of distress."

Rejoiced over the children of Judah in the day of their destruction

Psalms 137:7 "Remember, O LORD, the children of Edom in the day of Jerusalem; who said, Raze <it>, raze <it>, <even> to the foundation thereof."

WAY: Thou should not have looked on their affliction in the day of their calamity, nor have laid <hands> on their substance

Obadiah 1:13 "Thou shouldest not have entered into the gate of /\ my /\ people in the [ day ] of their calamity; yea, thou shouldest not have looked on their affliction in the [ day ] of their calamity, nor have laid <hands> on their substance in the day of their calamity;"

Obadiah 1:14 "Neither shouldest thou have stood in the crossway, to cut off those of his that did escape; neither shouldest thou have delivered up those of his that did remain in the [ day ] of distress."

IV) JUDGMENT RESULTS: {OBADIAH 1:15-16}

WHAT: The day of the LORD <is> near upon all the heathen

Obadiah 1:15 "For the [ day ] of the /\ LORD /\ <is> near upon all the heathen: as thou hast done, it shall be done unto thee: thy reward shall return upon thine own head." As thou done: Romans 2:5-6.
