This paper discusses the book of Micah. Another prophet of the same time was Isaiah. Some of the wording is similar to Isaiah. All scriptures are from the King James' version Bible.

WHO: God   WHOM:  Micah 

Micah 1:1 "The word of the /\ LORD /\ that came to Micah the Morasthite in the days of Jotham, Ahaz, <and> Hezekiah, kings of Judah, which he saw concerning Samaria and Jerusalem."

The word of the Lord that came to Micah the Morasthite: Micah name means who is like Jehovah. he anointing is in Micah 3:8

Jeremiah 26:18 "Micah the Morasthite prophesied in the days of Hezekiah king of Judah, and spake to all the people of Judah, saying, Thus saith the LORD of hosts; Zion shall be plowed <like> a field, and Jerusalem shall become heaps, and the mountain of the house as the high places of a forest."

Days of Jotham, Ahaz and Hezekiah:

Three kings of Judah served one after each another. Hezekiah was the most religious reformed of the period. He could not correct the hearts of the people.

WHAT: hearken, O earth, and all that therein is: and let the Lord God be witness against you

Micah 1:2 "[ Hear ], all ye people; hearken, O earth, and all that therein is: and let the /\ Lord /\ /\ God /\ be witness against you, the /\ Lord /\ from /\ his /\ holy temple."

Hearken, O earth, all that therein is:

1 Kings 22:28 "And Micaiah said, If thou return at all in peace, the LORD hath not spoken by me. And he said, Hearken, O people, every one of you." Micah was probably familiar with 2 Kings 22:28.

Micah 1:3 "For, behold, the /\ LORD /\ cometh forth out of /\ his /\ place, and will come down, and tread upon the high places of the earth."

WAY: The mountains shall be molten under him, and the valleys shall be cleft, as wax before the fire

Genesis 32:28 "And he said, Thy name shall be called no more Jacob, but Israel: for as a prince hast thou power with God and with men, and hast prevailed." Jacob was named Israel (interchange)

Micah 1:7 "And all the graven images thereof shall be beaten to pieces, and all the hires thereof shall be burned with the fire, and all the idols thereof will /\ I /\ lay desolate: for she gathered <it> of the hire of an harlot, and they shall return to the hire of an harlot."

Micah 1:8 "Therefore /\ I /\ will wail and howl, I will go stripped and naked: /\ I /\ will make a wailing like the dragons, and mourning as the owls."

Micah 1:9 "For her wound <is> incurable; for it is come unto Judah; he is come unto the gate of /\ my /\ people, <even> to Jerusalem."

Micah 1:10 "Declare ye <it> not at Gath, weep ye not at all: in the house of Aphrah roll thyself in the dust."

Declare ye it not at Gath: Gath name means wine press.

2 Samuel 1:20 "Tell it not in Gath, publish it not in the streets of Askelon; lest the daughters of the Philistines rejoice, lest the daughters of the uncircumcised triumph." Micah was probably familiar with 2 Samuel 1:20.

Micah 1:11 "Pass ye away, thou inhabitant of Saphir, having thy shame naked: the inhabitant of Zaanan came not forth in the mourning of Bethezel; he shall receive of you his standing."

Micah 1:12 "For the inhabitant of Maroth waited carefully for good: but evil came down from the /\ LORD /\ unto the gate of Jerusalem."

B) RELIGIOUS JUDGMENT {MICAH 2:1-2:13}

WHAT: Woe to them that devise iniquity and work evil

Micah 2:1 "Woe to them that devise iniquity, and work evil upon their beds! when the morning is light, they practice it, because it is in the power of their hand."

Woe to them that devise iniquity & work evil upon their beds:

Psalms 36:4 "He deviseth mischief upon his bed; he setteth himself in a way that is not good; he abhorreth not evil."

WAY: They covet fields, and take <them> by violence; and houses, and take <them> away

Micah 2:2 "And they covet fields, and take <them> by violence; and houses, and take <them> away: so they oppress a man and his house, even a man and his heritage."Each tribe giving land forever.

Saith the Lord against this family I devise an evil: Evil=disaster

Jeremiah 18:11 "Now therefore go to, speak to the men of Judah, and to the inhabitants of Jerusalem, saying, Thus saith the LORD; Behold, I frame evil against you, and devise a device against you: return ye now every one from his evil way, and make your ways and your doings good."

 Micah 2:4 "In that day shall <one> take up a parable against you, and lament with a doleful lamentation, <and> say, We be utterly spoiled: he hath changed the portion of my people: how hath he removed <it> from me! turning away he hath divided our fields."

Micah 2:5 "Therefore thou shalt have none that shall cast a cord by lot in the congregation of the /\ LORD /\."

Micah 2:6 "Prophesy ye not, <say they to them that> prophesy: they shall not prophesy to them, <that> they shall not take shame."

Prophesy: A Prophet was a spokesman for another, as for God. Other names/titles in the Bible are as follows: Man of God; Servant of the Lord; Messenger of the Lord; and Seer (to see: 3:7).

Exodus 7:1-2 "And the LORD said unto Moses, See, I have made thee a god to Pharaoh: and Aaron thy brother shall be thy prophet. {2} Thou shalt speak all that I command thee: and Aaron thy brother shall speak unto Pharaoh, that he send the children of Israel out of his land."

Jeremiah 1:7 "But the LORD said unto me, Say not, I <am> a child: for thou shalt go to all that I shall send thee, and whatsoever I command thee thou shalt speak."

Amos 3:7-8 "Surely the Lord GOD will do nothing, but he revealeth his secret unto his servants the prophets.{8} The lion hath roared, who will not fear? the Lord GOD hath spoken, who can but prophesy?"

1 Samuel 9:9 "(Beforetime in Israel, when a man went to inquire of God, thus he spake, Come, and let us go to the seer: for <he that is> now <called> a Prophet was beforetime called a Seer.)"

TRUE & FALSE PROPHETS TESTS:

- Spoke only in the name of the Lord (Yahweh).

- His life matches his position. He did not practice divination.

- Do not assume signs and wonders prove his position.

Deuteronomy 13:1-3 "If there arise among you a prophet, or a dreamer of dreams, and giveth thee a sign or a wonder, {2} And the sign or the wonder come to pass, whereof he spake unto thee, saying, Let us go after other gods, which thou hast not known, and let us serve them; {3} Thou shalt not hearken unto the words of that prophet, or that dreamer of dreams: for the LORD your God proveth you, to know whether ye love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul."

2 Thessalonians 2:9 "<Even him>, whose coming is after the working of Satan with all power and signs and lying wonders,"

- His message was in harmony with previous revelation.

- History will confirms his authenticity.

Deuteronomy 18:21-22 "And if thou say in thine heart, How shall we know the word which the LORD hath not spoken? {22} When a prophet speaketh in the name of the LORD, if the thing follow not, nor come to pass, that <is> the thing which the LORD hath not spoken, <but> the prophet hath spoken it presumptuously: thou shalt not be afraid of him."

- Moral quality and spiritual essence of the message.

- Inner witness to the Holy Spirit believer.

1 Corinthians 14:29 "Let the prophets speak two or three, and let the other judge."

Micah 2:7 "O <thou that art> named the house of Jacob, is the spirit of the /\ LORD /\ straitened? <are> these his doings? do not my words do good to him that walketh uprightly?"

WHOM: Heads of Jacob, and ye princes of the house of Israel

Micah 3:1 "And I said, [ Hear ], /\ I /\ pray you, O heads of Jacob, and ye princes of the house of Israel; <Is it> not for you to know [ judgment ]?"

Heads of Jacob & ye princes of the house of Israel: God's judgment against the people was due to the leadership not correcting errors.

Hosea 5:10 "The princes of Judah were like them that remove the bound: <therefore> I will pour out my wrath upon them like water."

Micah 3:2 "Who hate the good, and love the evil; who pluck off their skin from off them, and their flesh from off their bones;"

Micah 3:3 "Who also eat the flesh of /\ my /\ people, and flay their skin from off them; and they break their bones, and chop them in pieces, as for the pot, and as flesh within the caldron."

Micah 3:4 "Then shall they cry unto the /\ LORD /\, but /\ he /\ will not [ hear ] them: /\ he /\ will even hide /\ his /\ face from them at that time, as they have behaved themselves ill in their doings."

WAY: Prophets that make my people err

Micah 3:5 "Thus saith the /\ LORD /\ concerning the prophets that make /\ my /\ people err, that bite with their teeth, & cry, Peace; & he that putteth not into their mouths, they even prepare war against him."

Micah 3:6 "Therefore night <shall be> unto you, that ye shall not have a vision; and it shall be dark unto you, that ye shall not divine; and the sun shall go down over the prophets, and the day shall be dark over them."

Micah 3:7 "Then shall the seers be ashamed, and the diviners confounded: yea, they shall all cover their lips; for <there is> no answer of /\ God /\." Seers = prophets. See Micah 2:6

Micah 3:8 "But truly I am full of power by the spirit of the /\ LORD /\, and of [ judgment ], and of might, to declare unto Jacob his transgression, and to Israel his [ sin ]."

I am full of power by the spirit of the LORD: See Micah 2:8 also.

1 Peter 1:10-11 "Of which salvation the prophets have inquired and searched diligently, who prophesied of the grace <that should come> unto you: {11} Searching what, or what manner of time the Spirit of Christ which was in them did signify, when it testified beforehand the sufferings of Christ & the glory that should follow"

Micah 3:9 "[ Hear ] this, /\ I /\ pray you, ye heads of the house of Jacob, and princes of the house of Israel, that abhor [ judgment ], and pervert all equity."

WHY: They build up Zion with blood, and Jerusalem with iniquity

Micah 3:10 "They build up Zion with blood, and Jerusalem with iniquity."

Micah 3:11 "The heads thereof [ judge ] for reward, and the priests thereof teach for hire, and the prophets thereof divine for money: yet will they lean upon the /\ LORD /\, and say, <Is> not the /\ LORD /\ among us? none evil can come upon us."

Micah 3:12 "Therefore shall Zion for your sake be plowed <as> a field, and Jerusalem shall become heaps, and the mountain of the house as the high places of the forest."

Zion plowed as a field & Jerusalem shall become like a heap: The destruction occurred in 586 BC. Jeremiah quotes this verse about 100 years later.

Jeremiah 26:18-19 "Micah the Morasthite prophesied in the days of Hezekiah king of Judah, and spake to all the people of Judah, saying, Thus saith the LORD of hosts; Zion shall be plowed <like> a field, and Jerusalem shall become heaps, and the mountain of the house as the high places of a forest. {19} Did Hezekiah king of Judah and all Judah put him at all to death? did he not fear the LORD, and besought the LORD, and the LORD repented him of the evil which he had pronounced against them? Thus might we procure great evil against our souls." Jeremiah quotes Micah. Hezekiah repented.

DELIVERANCE FOR ISRAEL AND JUDAH: 4:1 - 5:15

Micah 4:1-5 and Isaiah 2:2-5 are parallel scriptures.

Isaiah 2:2-5 "And it shall come to pass in the last days, that the mountain of the Lord's house shall be established in the top of the mountains, and shall be exalted above the hills; and all nations shall flow unto it. [<- Micah 4:1] {3} And many people shall go and say, Come ye, and let us go up to the mountain of the LORD, to the house of the God of Jacob; and he will teach us of his ways, and we will walk in his paths: for out of Zion shall go forth the law, and the word of the LORD from Jerusalem. [<- Micah 4:2] {4} And he shall judge among the nations, and shall rebuke many people: and they shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruninghooks:nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war any more. [<- Micah 4:3] {5} O house of Jacob, come ye, & let us walk in the light of the LORD. [<- Micah 4:5]"

(1) In the last days it shall come to pass, that the mountain of the house of the LORD shall be established in the top of the mountains, and it shall be exalted above the hills; and people shall flow unto it. {Micah 4:1}

(2) Many nations shall come, and say, let us go up to the mountain of the LORD, and to the house of the God of Jacob; and he will teach us of his ways, and we will walk in his paths: for the law shall go forth of Zion, and the word of the LORD from Jerusalem. {Micah 4:2}

 

(3) And he shall judge among many people, and rebuke strong nations afar off; and they shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruninghooks: nation shall not lift up a sword against nation, neither shall they learn war any more. {Micah 4:3}

 

(4) But they shall sit every man under his vine and under his fig tree; and none shall make them afraid: for the mouth of the LORD of hosts hath spoken it. {Micah 4:4}

 

(5) For all people will walk every one in the name of his god, and we will walk in the name of the LORD our God for ever and ever. {Micah 4:5}

WHEN:  In the last days it shall come to pass

Micah 4:1 "But in the last days it shall come to pass, <that> the mountain of the house of the /\ LORD /\ shall be established in the top of the mountains, and it shall be exalted above the hills; and people shall flow unto it."

Zechariah 8:3 "Thus saith the LORD; I am returned unto Zion, and will dwell in the midst of Jerusalem: and Jerusalem shall be called a city of truth; and the mountain of the LORD of hosts the holy mountain."

WHEN: In that day, saith the LORD, will I gather her that is driven out, and her that I have afflicted

A) TRUE OR FALSE WORSHIP {MICAH 6:1-6:9}

Micah 6:1 "[ Hear ] ye now what the /\ LORD /\ saith; Arise, contend thou before the mountains, and let the hills hear thy voice."

Micah 6:2 "[ Hear ] ye, O mountains, the /\ LORD’S /\ controversy, and ye strong foundations of the earth: for the /\ LORD /\ hath a controversy with /\ his /\ people, and /\ he /\ will plead with Israel."

Micah 6:3 "O /\ my /\ people, what have /\ I /\ done unto thee? and wherein have /\ I /\ wearied thee? testify against /\ me /\."

Micah 6:4 "For /\ I /\ brought thee up out of the land of Egypt, and redeemed thee out of the house of servants; and /\ I /\ sent before thee Moses, Aaron, and Miriam."

Moses: Moses was God's leader of Israel to bring them out of Egypt to the promise land. God gave him ten miracles against Pharaoh. He was the law giver and writer of the first five books of the Old Testament. His name means taken out of water.

Aaron: Moses brother and the first High Priest over Israel. His name means mountain of strength.

Miriam: Moses sister. Her name means their rebellion or star of the sea.
