I) INTRODUCTION: {HAGGAI 1:1}

WHO: God  WHOM: Haggai

Haggai 1:1 "In the second year of Darius the king, in the sixth month, in the first day of the month, came the [ word ] of the /\ LORD /\ by Haggai the prophet unto Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and to Joshua the son of Josedech, the high priest, saying,"

WHEN: In the second year of Darius the king, in the sixth month, in the first day of the month

Darius: King of Babylon allows some 50k people to return to Jerusalem to rebuild the temple. The building is stopped when Zerubbabel refuses the help of the Samaritans (mixed blood Jews and gentiles). They send letters to Babylon which takes 4 kings later.

Haggai: Means festival of the Lord. The only other references are from Ezra's book. On the basis of 2:3 some believe he saw the original temple. That would make him over eighty and could be the reason he is mention first, as senior, before Zechariah. he would have come back with the remnant of people.

Ezra 5:1 "Then the prophets, Haggai the prophet, and Zechariah the son of Iddo, prophesied unto the Jews that <were> in Judah and Jerusalem in the name of the God of Israel, <even> unto them."

Ezra 6:14 "And the elders of the Jews builded, and they prospered through the prophesying of Haggai the prophet and Zechariah the son of Iddo. And they builded, and finished <it>, according to the commandment of the God of Israel, and according to the commandment of Cyrus, and Darius, and Artaxerxes king of Persia."

Word of the LORD:  God’s word directly to prophet.

See my papers: "God’s Word/Bible/Scriptures" for more information on this subject.

See my papers: "Bible Study & Interpretation Guideline" for more information on this subject.

Zerubbabel: Means born in Babylon. He is from line of Judah (David).

Shealtiel: He was the grand father.

1 Chronicles 3:17-19 "And the sons of Jeconiah; Assir, Salathiel his son, {18} Malchiram also, and Pedaiah, and Shenazar, Jecamiah, Hoshama, and Nedabiah. {19} And the sons of Pedaiah <were>, Zerubbabel, and Shimei: and the sons of Zerubbabel; Meshullam, and Hananiah, and Shelomith their sister:"

Joshua: Means the lord will save.

Zechariah 3:3-4 "Now Joshua was clothed with filthy garments, and stood before the angel. {4} And he answered and spake unto those that stood before him, saying, Take away the filthy garments from him. And unto him he said, Behold, I have caused thine iniquity to pass from thee, and I will clothe thee with change of raiment."

Zechariah 3:8 "Hear now, O Joshua the high priest, thou, and thy fellows that sit before thee: for they <are> men wondered at: for, behold, I will bring forth my servant the BRANCH."

Josedech (Jehozadak): Means the Lord has made just. The High Priest that went into captivity.

1 Chronicles 6:15 "And Jehozadak went <into captivity>, when the LORD carried away Judah and Jerusalem by the hand of Nebuchadnezzar."

Prophet: A spokesman for another, as for God. Other names/titles in the Bible are as follows: Man of God; Servant of the Lord; Messenger of the Lord; and Seer (to see).

Exodus 7:1-2 "And the LORD said unto Moses, See, I have made thee a god to Pharaoh: and Aaron thy brother shall be thy prophet. {2} Thou shalt speak all that I command thee: and Aaron thy brother shall speak unto Pharaoh, that he send the children of Israel out of his land."

Jeremiah 1:7 "But the LORD said unto me, Say not, I <am> a child: for thou shalt go to all that I shall send thee, and whatsoever I command thee thou shalt speak."

Amos 3:7-8 "Surely the Lord GOD will do nothing, but he revealeth his secret unto his servants the prophets. {8} The lion hath roared, who will not fear? the Lord GOD hath spoken, who can but prophesy?"

1 Samuel 9:9 "(Beforetime in Israel, when a man went to inquire of God, thus he spake, Come, and let us go to the seer: for <he that is> now <called> a Prophet was beforetime called a Seer.)"

TRUE & FALSE PROPHETS TESTS:

Haggai 1:12 "Then Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, and Joshua the son of Josedech, the high priest, with all the remnant of the people, obeyed the voice of the /\ LORD /\ their /\ God /\, and the words of Haggai the prophet, as the /\ LORD /\ their /\ God /\ had sent him, and the people did fear before the /\ LORD /\."

All the remnant of the people:

Obeyed the voice of the Lord their God:

Exodus 19:5 "Now therefore, if ye will obey my voice indeed, and keep my covenant, then ye shall be a peculiar treasure unto me above all people: for all the earth <is> mine:"

WHY: The LORD'S message unto the people, saying, I <am> with you, saith the LORD

Haggai 1:13 "Then spake Haggai the /\ LORD’S /\ messenger in the /\ LORD’S /\ message unto the people, saying, /\ I /\ <am> with you, saith the /\ LORD /\."

WHEN: Seventh <month>, in the one and twentieth <day> of the month

Haggai 2:1 "In the seventh <month>, in the one and twentieth <day> of the month, came the [ word ] of the /\ LORD /\ by the prophet Haggai, saying,"

Haggai 2:2 "Speak now to Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and to Joshua the son of Josedech, the high priest, and to the residue of the people, saying,"

WHILE: Who <is> left among you that saw this house in her first glory? and how do ye see it now? <is it> not in your eyes in comparison of it as nothing

Haggai 2:3 "Who <is> left among you that saw this [ house ] in her first { glory }? and how do ye see it now? <is it> not in your eyes in comparison of it as nothing?"

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

COMPARISON:  FORMER & LATTER HOUSE OF THE LORD {HAGGAI 2:3}

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

(1) Who <is> left among you that saw this house in her first glory? (1st Temple)

(2) How do ye see it now? <is it> not in your eyes in comparison of it as nothing (2nd Temple)

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Who is left..that saw this house..1st glory..how do you see it now:

Inspiring promises to older people, who saw Solomon's Temple, and were discourage. They are told of future coming of Messiah's manifestation & appearance. Jesus' glory will fill this temple.

See my papers: "Jesus in the Old Testament" for more information on this subject.

See my papers: "Jesus Life, Events, & Identity" for more information on this subject.

WHY: Be strong, all ye people of the land, saith the LORD, and work: for I <am> with you, saith the LORD of hosts

Haggai 2:4 "Yet now be strong, O Zerubbabel, saith the /\ LORD /\; and be strong, O Joshua, son of Josedech, the high priest; and be strong, all ye people of the land, saith the /\ LORD /\, and work: for /\ I /\ <am> with you, saith the /\ LORD /\ of hosts:"

Three be strong..I am with you (1:13):

Joshua 1:6-7 "Be strong and of a good courage: for unto this people shalt thou divide for an inheritance the land, which I sware unto their fathers to give them. {7} Only be thou strong and very courageous, that thou mayest observe to do according to all the law, which Moses my servant commanded thee: turn not from it <to> the right hand or <to> the left, that thou mayest prosper whithersoever thou goest."

Joshua 1:9 "Have not I commanded thee? Be strong and of a good courage; be not afraid, neither be thou dismayed: for the LORD thy God <is> with thee whithersoever thou goest."

Haggai 2:5 "<According to> the [ word ] that /\ I /\ covenanted with you when ye came out of Egypt, so /\ my /\ /\ spirit /\ remaineth among you: fear ye not."

I covenanted with you: God is true to his word (promises).

Numbers 23:19 "God <is> not a man, that he should lie; neither the son of man, that he should repent: hath he said, and shall he not do <it>? or hath he spoken, and shall he not make it good?"

My Spirit:

See my papers: "Holy Spirit Baptism" for more information on this subject.

See my papers: "God the Holy Spirit / Ghost Scriptures & Notes" for more information on this subject.

Haggai 2:6 "For thus saith the /\ LORD /\ of hosts; Yet once, it <is> a little while, and /\ I /\ will shake the heavens, and the earth, and the sea, and the dry <land>;"

I will shake the heavens, earth, sea, dry land, and nations: 2:21

The coming of God's judgments on the nations.

Hebrews 12:26-27 "Whose voice then shook the earth: but now he hath promised, saying, Yet once more I shake not the earth only, but also heaven. {27} And this <word>, Yet once more, signifieth the removing of those things that are shaken, as of things that are made, that those things which cannot be shaken may remain."

See my papers: "Judgment of Believers & Unbelievers" for more information on this subject.

See my papers: "End Times Events – Day of the Lord" for more information on this subject.

WAY: I will shake all nations, and the desire of all nations shall come: and I will fill this house with glory, saith the LORD of hosts

Haggai 2:7 "And /\ I /\ will shake all nations, and the desire of all nations shall come: and /\ I /\ will fill this [ house ] with { glory }, saith the /\ LORD /\ of hosts."

The desire of all nations shall come..fill this house with glory..glory of latter house greater than former: This is Jesus.

Malachi 3:1 "Behold, I will send my messenger, and he shall prepare the way before me: and the Lord, whom ye seek, shall suddenly come to his temple, even the messenger of the covenant, whom ye delight in: behold, he shall come, saith the LORD of hosts"

See my papers: "Two Comings as  King" for more information on this subject.

Haggai 2:8 "The silver <is> /\ mine /\, and the gold <is> /\ mine /\, saith the /\ LORD /\ of hosts."

Silver is mine..gold is mine:

1 Chronicles 29:2 "Now I have prepared with all my might for the house of my God the gold for <things to be made> of gold, and the silver for <things> of silver, and the brass for <things> of brass, the iron for <things> of iron, and wood for <things> of wood; onyx stones, and <stones> to be set, glistering stones, and of divers colours, and all manner of precious stones, and marble stones in abundance." Solomon had silver and gold from God.

Ezra 6:5 "And also let the golden and silver vessels of the house of God, which Nebuchadnezzar took forth out of the temple which <is> at Jerusalem, and brought unto Babylon, be restored, and brought again unto the temple which <is> at Jerusalem, <every one> to his place, and place <them> in the house of God."

WHAT: The glory of this latter house shall be greater than of the former, saith the LORD of hosts: and in this place will I give peace

Haggai 2:9 "The { glory } of this latter [ house ] shall be greater than of the former, saith the /\ LORD /\ of hosts: and in this place will /\ I /\ give peace, saith the /\ LORD /\ of hosts." Future glory is Jesus, God’s, presents in the temple.

See my papers: "Former & Latter Rains" for more information on this subject.

In this place will I give peace (Shalom):

Isaiah 9:6 "For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace."

Haggai 2:11 "Thus saith the /\ LORD /\ of hosts; Ask now the priests <concerning> the law, saying,"

See my papers: "Questions & Answers on Law, Faith, & Liberty" for more information on this subject.

WHY: If one bear holy flesh shall it be holy? And the priests answered and said, No

Haggai 2:12 "If one bear holy flesh in the skirt of his garment, and with his skirt do touch bread, or pottage, or wine, or oil, or any meat, shall it be holy? And the priests answered and said, No."

Haggai 2:13 "Then said Haggai, If <one that is> unclean by a dead body touch any of these, shall it be unclean? And the priests answered and said, It shall be unclean."

Haggai 2:14 "Then answered Haggai, and said, So <is> this people, and so <is> this nation before me, saith the /\ LORD /\; and so <is> every work of their hands; and that which they offer there <is> unclean."

Unclean by a dead body touch any of these, it shall be unclean..

So is this people.nation.work of their hands.which offer.unclean:

Numbers 19:11 "He that toucheth the dead body of any man shall be unclean seven days."

Haggai 2:15 "And now, I pray you, [ consider ] from this day and upward, from before a stone was laid upon a stone in the [ temple ] of the /\ LORD /\:"

Haggai 2:16 "Since those <days> were, when <one> came to an heap of twenty <measures>, there were <but> ten: when <one> came to the pressfat for to draw out fifty <vessels> out of the press, there were <but> twenty."

Haggai 2:17 "/\ I /\ smote you with blasting and with mildew and with hail in all the labours of your hands; yet ye <turned> not to me, saith the /\ LORD /\." From Deuteronomy 28: Blessing & cursing chapter.

Deuteronomy 28:22 "The LORD shall smite thee with a consumption, and with a fever, and with an inflammation, and with an extreme burning, and with the sword, and with blasting, and with mildew; and they shall pursue thee until thou perish."

WAY: Consider now from this day and upward that the foundation of the LORD'S temple was laid, consider <it>

Haggai 2:18 "[ Consider ] now from this day and upward, from the four and twentieth day of the ninth <month>, <even> from the day that the foundation of the /\ LORD’S /\ [ temple ] was laid, consider <it>."

Haggai 2:19 "Is the seed yet in the barn? yea, as yet the vine, and the fig tree, and the pomegranate, and the olive tree, hath not brought forth: from this day will I bless <you>."

Vine..fig tree..gomegranate..olive tree..hath not brought forth:

Malachi 3:10 "Bring ye all the tithes into the storehouse, that there may be meat in mine house, and prove me now herewith, saith the LORD of hosts, if LORD will not open you the windows of heaven, and pour you out a blessing, that <there shall> not <be room> enough <to receive it>."

V) DISCOURSE RESTORE GLORY TO ISRAEL {HAGGAI 2:20 – 2:23}

Haggai 2:20 "And again the [ word ] of the /\ LORD /\ came unto Haggai in the four and twentieth <day> of the month, saying,"

WHAT: I will overthrow the throne of kingdoms, and I will destroy the strength of the kingdoms of the heathen

Haggai 2:22 "And /\ I /\ will overthrow the throne of kingdoms, and /\ I /\ will destroy the strength of the kingdoms of the heathen; and /\ I /\ will overthrow the chariots, and those that ride in them; and the horses and their riders shall come down, every one by the sword of his brother."

I will overthrow the throne of kingdoms..destroy heathen strength:

Zechariah 14:13 "And it shall come to pass in that day, <that> a great tumult from the LORD shall be among them; and they shall lay hold every one on the hand of his neighbour, and his hand shall rise up against the hand of his neighbour."

WHY: Saith the LORD of hosts, for I have chosen thee

Haggai 2:23 "In that day, saith the /\ LORD /\ of hosts, will /\ I /\ take thee, O Zerubbabel, my servant, the son of Shealtiel, saith the /\ LORD /\, and will make thee as a signet: for /\ I /\ have chosen thee, saith the /\ LORD /\ of hosts."

WAY: Saith the LORD of hosts, will I take thee and will make thee as a signet

In that day..I take thee..will make thee a signet..chosen thee:

Isaiah 41:8-9 "But thou, Israel, <art> my servant, Jacob whom I have chosen, the seed of Abraham my friend. {9} <Thou> whom I have taken from the ends of the earth, and called thee from the chief men thereof, and said unto thee, Thou <art> my servant; I have chosen thee, and not cast thee away."
