INTRODUCTION: {HABAKKUK 1:1}
WHO: Habakkuk
Habakkuk 1:1 "The burden which Habakkuk the prophet did see."
Burden which Habakkuk: Habakkuk means he that embraces or wrestling with God. No other Biblical reference is found. Habakkuk had a burden for God to correct Judah and for God's own holiness.
Prophet did see: Also vision in 2:3
Prophet: A spokesman for another, as for God. Other names/titles in the Bible are as follows: Man of God; Servant of the Lord; Messenger of the Lord; and Seer (to see).
Exodus 7:1-2 "And the LORD said unto Moses, See, I have made thee a god to Pharaoh: and Aaron thy brother shall be thy prophet. {2} Thou shalt speak all that I command thee: and Aaron thy brother shall speak unto Pharaoh, that he send the children of Israel out of his land."
Jeremiah 1:7 "But the LORD said unto me, Say not, I <am> a child: for thou shalt go to all that I shall send thee, and whatsoever I command thee thou shalt speak."
Amos 3:7-8 "Surely the Lord GOD will do nothing, but he revealeth his secret unto his servants the prophets. {8} The lion hath roared, who will not fear? the Lord GOD hath spoken, who can but prophesy?"
1 Samuel 9:9 "(Beforetime in Israel, when a man went to inquire of God, thus he spake, Come, and let us go to the seer: for <he that is> now <called> a Prophet was beforetime called a Seer.)"
TRUE & FALSE PROPHETS TESTS:
- Spoke only in the name of the Lord (Yahweh).
- His life matches his position. He did not practice divination.
- Do not assume signs and wonders prove his position.
Deuteronomy 13:1-3 "If there arise among you a prophet, or a dreamer of dreams, and giveth thee a sign or a wonder, {2} And the sign or the wonder come to pass, whereof he spake unto thee, saying, Let us go after other gods, which thou hast not known, and let us serve them; {3} Thou shalt not hearken unto the words of that prophet, or that dreamer of dreams: for the LORD your God proveth you, to know whether ye love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul."
2 Thessalonians 2:9 "<Even him>, whose coming is after the working of Satan with all power and signs and lying wonders,"
- His message was in harmony with previous revelation.
- History confirms his authenticity.
Deuteronomy 18:21-22 "And if thou say in thine heart, How shall we know the word which the LORD hath not spoken? {22} When a prophet speaketh in the name of the LORD, if the thing follow not, nor come to pass, that <is> the thing which the LORD hath not spoken, <but> the prophet hath spoken it presumptuously: thou shalt not be afraid of him."
- Moral quality and spiritual essence of the message.
- Inner witness to the Holy Spirit believer.
1 Corinthians 14:29 "Let the prophets speak two or three, and let the other judge."
II)
FAITH PROBLEM – WHAT IS GOD DOING: {HABAKKUK 1:2 – 2:4}
A)
FIRST PROBLEM - WHY DOES JUDAH’S EVIL GO UNPUNISH: {HABAKKUK 1:2 – 1:4}
Habakkuk 1:2 "O /\ LORD /\, how long shall I cry, and thou wilt not hear! <even> cry out unto thee <of> violence, and thou wilt not save!" 1st cry = help; 2nd cry = shout/scream intense cry for help.
See my papers: "Prayer"
for more information on this
subject.
PROPHET: O Lord, how long shall I cry, and thou wilt not hear!
The prophet sees the evil and wonders why God does not punish them.
See my papers: "Church Officers and their Qualifications" for more information on this subject.
WHAT: Why dost
thou show me iniquity, grievance, violence <that> raise up strife and
contention
Habakkuk 1:3 "Why dost thou show me iniquity, and cause <me> to behold grievance? for spoiling and violence <are> before me: and there are <that> raise up strife and contention." Does God condone?
WHY: Law is
slacked, and judgment doth never go forth: for the wicked doth compass about
the righteous
Habakkuk 1:4 "Therefore the law is slacked, and [ judgment ] doth never go forth: for the wicked doth compass about the [ righteous ]; therefore wrong judgment proceedeth." Courts controlled by bribery.
Righteous: Character of being right, just, holy, clean & pure. God conforms to a moral proper standard or norm. To miss the norm is to sin. Jesus alone was perfect. He is the rock.
See my papers: "Imputed/Reckoned/Counted
Righteousness of Jesus" for more information on this subject.
See my papers: "True Gospel
for Salvation by the Imputed Righteousness of Jesus" for more information on this subject.
GOD: Judgment never goes forth.wicked compass righteous.wrong goes

& Answers on Law, Faith, & Liberty" for more information on this subject.
A)
FIRST SOLUTION - BABYLONIANS WILL PUNISH JUDAH: {HABAKKUK 1:5 – 1:11}
WHEN: <I>
will work a work in your days
Habakkuk 1:5 "Behold ye among the heathen, and regard, and wonder marvellously: for < /\ I /\ > will work a work in your days, <which> ye will not believe, though it be told <you>."
I will work in your days, Ye would not believe: Judah/prophet could not understand God giving them over to arrogant Babylonians.
See my papers: "God’s Dispensation & Covenant Plans" for more information on this subject.
Similarly, Acts says, God would punish Jews for not receiving Jesus
Acts 13:41 "Behold, ye despisers, and wonder, and perish: for I work a work in your days, a work which ye shall in no wise believe, though a man declare it unto you."
See my papers: "Israel & Jewish People in God’s Plan" for more information on this subject.
WHAT: I raise up
the Chaldeans to possess the dwellingplaces <that are> not theirs
Habakkuk 1:6 "For, lo, /\ I /\ raise up the Chaldeans, <that> bitter and hasty nation, which shall march through the breadth of the land, to possess the dwellingplaces <that are> not theirs."
WHO: I raise up the Chaldeans
I raise up the Chaldeans..bitter, hasty, terrible & dreadful nation
God raised up these forces to punish Judah for her sins. Babylon did it as a natural characteristic. God used them for his purpose then punished them for their sin.
See my papers: "Inductive
Bible Study – Book of Daniel" for more information on this subject.
Genesis 11:28 "And Haran died before his father Terah in the land of his nativity, in Ur of the Chaldees." Abraham's father is Terah.
Isaiah 48:20 "Go ye forth of Babylon, flee ye from the Chaldeans, with a voice of singing declare ye, tell this, utter it <even> to the end of the earth; say ye, The LORD hath redeemed his servant Jacob."
Habakkuk 1:7 "They <are> terrible and dreadful: their [ judgment ] and their dignity shall proceed of themselves." Dignity=pride/honor
Habakkuk 1:8 "Their horses also are swifter than the leopards, and are more fierce than the evening wolves: and their horsemen shall spread themselves, and their horsemen shall come from far; they shall fly as the eagle <that> hasteth to eat."
WAY: They shall come all for violence: they shall gather the captivity as the sand
Habakkuk 1:9 "They shall come all for violence: their faces shall sup up <as> the east wind, and they shall gather the captivity as the sand." Moved captives to other locations (Daniel). See 2:5.
Habakkuk 1:10 "And they shall scoff at the kings, and the princes shall be a scorn unto them: they shall deride every strong hold; for they shall heap dust, and take it." Pride shows in speed/power
Habakkuk 1:11 "Then shall <his> mind change, and he shall pass over, and offend, <imputing> this his power unto his god."
C)
SECOND PROBLEM – HOW CAN A MORE WICKED BABYLON
PUNISH A MORE PURE PEOPLE? : {HABAKKUK 1:12 – 1:17}
WHY: O LORD, thou hast ordained them for judgment; and, O mighty God, thou hast established them for correction
Habakkuk 1:12 "<Art> thou not from everlasting, O /\ LORD /\ my /\ God /\, mine Holy One? we shall not die. O /\ LORD /\, thou hast ordained them for [ judgment ]; and, O mighty /\ God /\, thou hast established them for correction." "Everlasting.." Psalms 90:2; Mighty=rock/immutability
Holy One..thou art of pure eyes than to behold evil: Babylon = evil
Prophet questions God approving the wicked deeds of Babylon.
Thou hast established them for correction:
Isaiah 45:1 "Thus saith the LORD to his anointed, to Cyrus, whose right hand I have holden, to subdue nations before him; and I will loose the loins of kings, to open before him the two leaved gates; and the gates shall not be shut;"
WHAT: <Thou
art> of purer eyes than to behold evil, and canst not look on iniquity
Habakkuk
WHY: The wicked devoureth <the man that is> more righteous than he
PROPHET: The man (Judah) is more righteous than he (Chaldean's)
Habakkuk 1:14 "And makest men as the fishes of the sea, as the creeping things, <that have> no ruler over them?" No guidance.
Habakkuk 1:15 "They take up all of them with the angle, they catch them in their net, and gather them in their drag: therefore they rejoice and are glad." Angle..net technique of fishing.
Habakkuk 1:16 "Therefore they sacrifice unto their net, and burn incense unto their drag; because by them their portion <is> fat, and their meat plenteous." Offer sacrifices before fishing.
Habakkuk 1:17 "Shall they therefore empty their net, and not spare continually to slay the nations?" Compared fishing to nations
GOD: The Chaldeans' destruction
D)
SECOND SOLUTION – BABYLON WILL BE PUNISH & FAITH WILL BE REWARDED:
{HABAKKUK 2:1 – 2:4}
Habakkuk 2:1 "I will stand upon my watch, and set me upon the tower, and will watch to see what he will say unto me, and what I shall answer when I am reproved." Questioning God's justice.

See my papers: "Holy Spirit
Baptism" for more
information on this subject.
Write the vision: Habakkuk 1:1 Prophet's see/A revelation from God.
Numbers 12:6 "And he said, Hear now my words: If there be a prophet among you, <I> the LORD will make myself known unto him in a vision, <and> will speak unto him in a dream."
Joel 2:28 "And it shall come to pass afterward, <that> I will pour out my spirit upon all flesh; and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, your young men shall see visions:"
WAY: Though it
tarry, wait for it; because it will surely come, it will not tarry
Habakkuk 2:3 "For the vision <is> yet for an appointed time, but at the end it shall speak, and not lie: though it tarry, wait for it; because it will surely come, it will not tarry." God's timing.
WHAT: For the vision <is> yet for an appointed time WHEN: an appointed time
For the vision is yet for an appointed time: 70 years (539BC) after Habakkuk the nation of Babylon falls. See Daniel 5:25-31. Jesus 2nd

2:4
See my papers: "Justification
of Faith – Old Testament Doctrine" for more information on this subject.
His soul is lifted up is not upright in him:
Proverbs 16:18 "Pride <goeth> before destruction, and an haughty spirit before a fall."
Just: How can a righteous, holy God forgive sinners and accept them as if they never sinned? God performed a legal and formal acquittal from guilt to the believer. He declared us to be righteous by imputation.
See my papers: "Justification"
for more information on this
subject.
Imputed: God reckon to us, account us, & attributed to us
His righteous. It does not imply a transfer of moral qualities but credits us with Jesus righteous as our innocent substitute. Jesus fulfilled the law & His payment of our debt was reckon to us.
See my papers: "True Gospel
for Salvation by the Imputed Righteousness of Jesus" for more information on this subject.
Faith: Faith is not the same as hope. Hope is wishing for something. Faith is having it in a faith dimension. When God reveals (manifests) it to this dimension is up to Him. We are to believe, when we pray, that the answer has already occurred. Future prayers are thanksgiving & praise for God's gift we already have in faith.
See my papers: "Faith"
for more information on this
subject.
Hebrews 11:6 "But without faith <it is> impossible to please <him>: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and <that> he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him."
Romans 14:23 "And he that doubteth is damned if he eat, because <he eateth> not of faith: for whatsoever <is> not of faith is sin." The just shall live by his faith: The correct Hebrew is:
"The righteous man shall live by his faithfulness"
Romans 1:17 "For therein is the righteousness of God revealed from faith to faith: as it is written, The just shall live by faith."
Romans 3:27-28 "Where <is> boasting then? It is excluded. By what law? of works? Nay: but by the law of faith. {28} Therefore we conclude that a man is justified by faith without the deeds of the law." The law shows sin. The faithful man is imputed righteous.
Galatians 3:11 "But that no man is justified by the law in the sight of God, <it is> evident: for, The just shall live by faith."
Hebrews 10:38 "Now the just shall live by faith: but if <any man> draw back, my soul shall have no pleasure in him."
The results of faith:

James 2:17-18 "Even so faith, if it hath not works, is dead, being alone. {18} Yea, a man may say, Thou hast faith, and I have works: show me thy faith without thy works, and I will show thee my faith by my works."
James 2:23 "And the scripture was fulfilled which saith, Abraham believed God, and it was imputed unto him for righteousness: and he was called the Friend of God."
III)
BABYLON PUFFED UP: {HABAKKUK 2:5 – 2:20}
Habakkuk 2:5 "Yea also, because he transgresseth by wine, <he is> a proud man, neither keepeth at home, who enlargeth his desire as hell, and <is> as death, and cannot be satisfied, but gathereth unto him all nations, and heapeth unto him all people:" hell=sheol
FIVE "WOES" AGAINST
BABYLON: 2:6, 2:9, 2:12, 2:15, &
Habakkuk 2:6 "Shall not all these take up a parable against him, and a taunting proverb against him, and say, [ Woe ] to him that increaseth <that which is> not his! how long? and to him that ladeth himself with thick clay!" Thick clay = heavy pledges/debt.
