Paul is writing from a prison cell in Rome nearing his death for Christ:

Paul's two prison stays are in a Rome prison first house arrest then in a cold cell:

2nd Timothy, written in 67 AD, was the last letter Paul wrote just before his death. Paul was imprisoned, in Rome twice. The first time, 62 AD, in a rented house. This time in a cold cell before his execution for the faith of Jesus.

Acts 28:30-31 "And Paul dwelt two whole years in his own hired house, and received all that came in unto him, {31} Preaching the kingdom of God, and teaching those things which concern the Lord Jesus Christ, with all confidence, no man forbidding him."

He was released and went on his fourth missionary journey:

The second prison time Paul is in a cold cell in Rome:

2 Timothy 1:16-17 "The Lord give mercy unto the house of Onesiphorus; for he oft refreshed me, and was not ashamed of my chain: {17} But, when he was in Rome, he sought me out very diligently, and found me."

2 Timothy 2:9-10 "Wherein I suffer trouble, as an evil doer, even unto bonds; but the word of God is not bound. {10} Therefore I endure all things for the elect's sakes, that they may also obtain the salvation which is in Christ Jesus with eternal glory."

Paul is to be killed shortly:

2 Timothy 4:5-8 "But watch thou in all things, endure afflictions, do the work of an evangelist, make full proof of thy ministry. {6} For I am now ready to be offered, and the time of my departure is at hand. {7} I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith: {8} Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day: and not to me only, but unto all them also that love his appearing."

Paul is lonely and want Timothy to come with documents:

2 Timothy 4:9-13 "Do thy diligence to come shortly unto me: {10} For Demas hath forsaken me, having loved this present world, and is departed unto Thessalonica; Crescens to Galatia, Titus unto Dalmatia. {11} Only Luke is with me. Take Mark, and bring him with thee: for he is profitable to me for the ministry. {12} And Tychicus have I sent to Ephesus.{13} The cloak that I left at Troas with Carpus, when thou comest, bring with thee, and the books, but especially the parchments."

Paul: Saul means asked for and Paul means little or small. Paul is in Rome in prison and certainly needs the comfort and help of Timothy, but he care for the church is of more importance. Paul's apostleship is shown in (1 Corinthians 9:1-2, 15:9-10). Paul has had plenty & little (Phil. 4:12). He does ask for cloak, books, parchments (4:13); in addition to Timothy's presents (4:9 & 4:21).

See my paper: "Apostles" for more information on this subject.

Apostle: An Apostle is one sent by God, with power of attorney and authority, to act (with power) in place of sender. He was chosen and ordained to the position to be a witness of what God shows him.

Apostles started many churches and appointed Elders to the church.

Sent my God-see my paper on: Church Offices & Their Qualifications.

1 Corinthians 9:1-2 "Am I not an apostle? am I not free? have I not seen Jesus Christ our Lord? are not ye my work in the Lord? {2} If I be not an apostle unto others, yet doubtless I am to you: for the seal of mine apostleship are ye in the Lord."

2 Corinthians 12:12 "Truly the signs of an apostle were wrought among you in all patience, in signs, and wonders, and mighty deeds.

Galatians 2:8 "(For he that wrought effectually in Peter to the apostleship of the circumcision, the same was mighty in me toward the Gentiles:)"

Hebrews 2:4 "God also bearing <them> witness, both with signs and wonders, and with divers miracles, and gifts of the Holy Ghost, according to his own will?"

By the will of God:

1 Corinthians 9:1 "Am I not an apostle? am I not free? have I not seen Jesus Christ our Lord? are not ye my work in the Lord?"

WHOM: TIMOTHY

2 Timothy 1:2 "To Timothy, <my> dearly beloved /\ son /\: Grace, mercy, <and> peace, from /\ God /\ the /\ Father /\ and T Christ TM Jesus M our /\ Lord /\."

Timothy (Timotheus): Means worship of God. He was as a son to Paul. He was to carry on Paul's ministry after Paul departed. His father was a Greek and mother was a Jew (Acts 16:1). His mother was Eunice and grandmother was Lois, both of whom were Christians (2 Timothy 1:5). Paul's letter send with regards from Timothy include: 2 Corinthians 1:1, Philippians 1:1, Colossians 1:1,

1&2 Thessalonians, Philemon 1 & Hebrews 13:23. Paul writes to Timothy in his 2 books. Paul addresses his ministry in 1 Cor 16:10& 1 Timothy 4:11-4:16. His apostleship in 1 Thessalonians 1:1/2:6.

2 Timothy 1:4-6 "Greatly desiring to see thee, being mindful of thy tears, that I may be filled with joy; {5} When I call to remembrance the unfeigned faith that is in thee, which dwelt first in thy grandmother Lois, and thy mother Eunice; and I am persuaded that in thee also. {6} Wherefore I put thee in remembrance that thou stir up the gift of God, which is in thee by the putting on of my hands."Paul's last testament from prison is to his spiritual son

My dearly beloved son:

1 Timothy 1:2 "Unto Timothy, <my> own son in the faith: Grace, mercy, <and> peace, from God our Father and Jesus Christ our Lord."

Titus 1:4 "To Titus, <mine> own son after the common faith: Grace, mercy, <and> peace, from God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ our Saviour."

Grace: Getting what we do not deserve. It is a gift (Romans 5:15). We are saved by grace (Acts 15:11 & Ephesians 2:8). Grace grows by Knowledge of Jesus (2 Peter 3:18) & humility (1 Peter 5:5).

James 4:6 "But he giveth more grace. Wherefore he saith, God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble."

Mercy: Not getting what we deserve. It is a gift (Titus 3:5).

Peace: Hebrew word Shalom used for hello, goodbye & God bless you.

Only God gives peace to ones spirit of forgiveness & restoration.

John 14:27 "Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid."

Philippians 4:7 "And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus." Peace the opposite to anxiety. Tranquillity & worry free.

See my paper: "Triunity - Father, Son, & Holy Spirit" for more information on this subject.

God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ: God is a triunity. God can not be divided. Father, Jesus, and Holy Spirit are the way the one God reveals himself. If one sees Jesus, he also sees the Father and the Holy Spirit at the same time since God can not be separated (Colossians 1:15). Jesus is perfect man and God.

Colossians 2:9 "For in him dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead bodily."

John 14:9-10 "Jesus saith unto him, Have I been so long time with you, and yet hast thou not known me, Philip? he that hath seen me hath seen the Father; and how sayest thou <then>, Show us the Father? {10} Believest thou not that I am in the Father, and the Father in me? the words that I speak unto you I speak not of myself: but the Father that dwelleth in me, he doeth the works."

2 Timothy 1:3 "I thank /\ God /\, /\ whom /\ I serve from <my> forefathers with pure conscience, that without ceasing I have remembrance of thee in my prayers night and day;"

I have remembrance of thee in my prayers night and day:

See my paper: "Prayer" for more information on this subject.

Do not cease to pray for you: Paul made similar prayers to Philippians 1:9-11 in several of his books such as:

Romans 15:5-6, 13 1 Thessalonians 3:11-13

Ephesians 1:17-20 2 Thessalonians 1:11-12

Ephesians 3:16-19 Hebrews 13:20-21

Colossians 1:9-14 Also Peter in 1 Peter 5:10-11 & Acts 4:29-30

1 Thessalonians 5:17 "Pray without ceasing."

2 Timothy 1:4 "Greatly desiring to see thee, being mindful of thy tears, that I may be filled with joy;"

Joy:

John 16:24 "Hitherto have ye asked nothing in my name: ask, and ye shall receive, that your joy may be full."

Psalms 16:11 "Thou wilt show me the path of life: in thy presence <is> fulness of joy; at thy right hand <there are> pleasures for evermore."

II) GOD'S CALL TO TIMOTHY: {2nd TIMOTHY 1:5-7}

2 Timothy 1:5 "When I call to remembrance the unfeigned [ faith ] that is in thee, which dwelt first in thy grandmother Lois, and thy mother Eunice; and I am [ persuaded ] that in thee also."

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

KEY WORD: FAITH {2 TIMOTHY 1:5 - 4:7}

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

(1) {1:5} Remember Timothy's faith first in Grandmother (Lois), then in mother (Eunice), and now in you

(2) {1:13} Hold fast the words of Paul in faith and love which are in Christ Jesus

(3) {2:18} Error of some that the resurrection is past & overthrow the faith of some

(4) {2:22} Flee youthful lusts but follow righteousness, faith, charity, peace

(5) {3:8} Some resist the truth of corrupt minds, reprobate concerning the faith

(6) {3:10} You have known Paul doctrine, manner of life, purpose, faith, longsuffering, charity, patience, affliction

(7) {3:15} From child you known the holy scriptures which are able to make you wise unto salvation through faith

(8) {4:7} Paul has fought the good fight, finish the course, have kept the faith

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Faith:

Hebrews 11:1 "Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen." Faith is not the same as hope. Hope is wishing for something. Faith is having it in a faith dimension.

When God reveals (manifests) it to this dimension is up to Him. We are to believe, when we pray, that the answer has already occurred. Future prayers are thanksgiving and praise for God's gift we have.

Grandmother Lois & Mother Eunice:

Lois name means better.

Eunice name means good victory.

Acts 16:1 "Then came he to Derbe and Lystra: and, behold, a certain disciple was there, named Timotheus, the son of a certain woman, which was a Jewess, and believed; but his father <was> a Greek:"

2 Timothy 3:15 "And that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus."

2 Timothy 1:6 "Wherefore I put thee in remembrance that thou stir up the gift of /\ God /\, which is in thee by the putting on of my hands."

Gift of God:

1 Corinthians 1:7 "So that ye come behind in no gift; waiting for the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ:"

1 Corinthians 12:28-31 "And God hath set some in the church, first apostles, secondarily prophets, thirdly teachers, after that miracles, then gifts of healings, helps, governments, diversities of tongues. {29} <Are> all apostles? <are> all prophets? <are> all teachers? <are> all workers of miracles? {30} Have all the gifts of healing? do all speak with tongues? do all interpret? {31} But covet earnestly the best gifts: and yet show I unto you a more excellent way." Excellent way of love.

1 Corinthians 12:4-11 "Now there are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit. {5} And there are differences of administrations, but the same Lord. {6} And there are diversities of operations, but it is the same God which worketh all in all. {7} But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man to profit withal. {8} For to one is given by the Spirit the word of wisdom; to another the word of knowledge by the same Spirit; {9} To another faith by the same Spirit; to another the gifts of healing by the same Spirit; {10} To another the working of miracles; to another prophecy; to another discerning of spirits; to another <divers> kinds of tongues; to another the interpretation of tongues: {11} But all these worketh that one and the selfsame Spirit, dividing to every man severally as he will."

1 Corinthians 14:1 "Follow after charity, and desire spiritual <gifts>, but rather that ye may prophesy."

By the putting on of my hands:

1 Timothy 4:14 "Neglect not the gift that is in thee, which was given thee by prophecy, with the laying on of the hands of the presbytery."

WHY: GOD HAS NOT GIVEN US THE SPIRIT OF FEAR, BUT OF POWER, OF LOVE, SOUND MIND

2 Timothy 1:7 "For /\ God /\ hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind."

God hath not given us spirit of fear; but power, love, sound mind:

See my paper: "Love" for more information on this subject.

Fear = cowardice; sound-mind = self control or common sense.

1 Corinthians 16:10-11 "Now if Timotheus come, see that he may be with you without fear: for he worketh the work of the Lord, as I also <do>. {11} Let no man therefore despise him: but conduct him forth in peace, that he may come unto me: for I look for him with the brethren."

1 Timothy 4:12 "Let no man despise thy youth; but be thou an example of the believers, in word, in conversation, in charity, in spirit, in faith, in purity."
