Francine writes: "This isn't a photograph. I made it myself with computer graphics programs. All the pieces in the Digital Galleries were created entirely inside my computer using various and sundry graphics programs, and have no actual source in the "real" world. They are representations of a virtual reality. I guess you could call them computer generated graphics. Same idea as much of the stuff in George Lucas' most recent Star Wars film, except mine involve no live actors! The sun and sea images did use one piece of real world info: I borrowed a NASA photo of the sun and used it as a filter for the light source. But the sea and the sky and clouds were all artificially created, and the "sun" is a globular light source I plunked down where I wanted it to be.I have always done work that is best characterized as being about sex and death. Occasionally something else appears, but not very often.
"When I was in treatment I tried to do a piece specifically about cancer, but it didn't turn out very well, so I returned to letting my non-verbal brain section do whatever it wanted to do. I began the sun and sea series in July 1998 (about two years after my breast cancer diagnosis), and while some of the images were promising, none seemed to be quite what I wanted. I returned to the series in November of 1999, and finally got it right. Unlike much of what I do, these images are actually liked by most people."
