Changing StylesOver the years, my music has undergone a wide variety of styles. You can see more details about these by reading the biographical section of this site. For now, I'll just say that the earliest pieces I still acknowledge (although I don't particularly make efforts to disseminate them) date from the early 1970's and are reasonably good examples of what is usually called "70's progressive rock" (i.e., music in the style of groups like Jethro Tull, ELP, Yes and PFM). When I headed off to college, I went through a period where most of my pieces remained uncompleted and those that were finished were highly imitative (mostly of Charles Ives, Bela Bartok or George Crumb). Over the next several years (representing my studies at the New England Conservatory of Music and at Princeton University), my music developed along two distinct but parallel threads. On the one hand, I became increasingly enamored of highly sophisticated twelve-tone music (mostly along lines espoused by my one-time teacher Donald Martino but also incorporating much of what I learned from Milton Babbitt and the music of Arnold Schoenberg). At the same time, however, I found myself feeling increasingly free about succumbing to the influence of some of the earlier composers I loved...especially Brahms, Mahler and Puccini. I also, at least from time to time, allowed some of my early experiences with progressive rock to filter into some of my pieces! Most recently, I've come across a wonderful band started by an old Princeton colleague of mine (Valerie Vigoda) called Groovelily. Not only do they make wonderful music, they write lyrics that consistently embody so much of what I believe in (especially with respect to following your dreams, even when you have to make sacrifices to do so) and, above all, they so epitomize the sheer and utter JOY of music-making that every single one of their performances is a total inspiration to me. Both through their wonderful music and the personal friendship I have developed with them, I find myself writing a more popular and accessible style of music again. Until any of that is available, be sure to check out Groovelily whenever they are in your area! This page will allow you to view a number of different lists of my music. I'm also starting to prepare MP3 excerpts of several of these pieces and hope to have those available for download in the not-too-distant future.
