This appeared in an article in the
July '49 Aeromodeller, What follows is from that article.
The firm of Mann & Grimmer produced several thousands of these for sale, both as a kit and a RTF. The staff of Aeromodeller interviewed Mr Grimmer, and with his memories , photos and sketches produced the plans. And Mr. Elwell and Mr. Cull made a model. They report that it would ROG and climb "steadily yet powerfully" for a 50 or 60 sec flight and was fully capable of the originally guaranteed 1/4 mile. Not bad for a piano wire model weighing a pound and with a span variously reported as 30" or 33". There is talk in the magazine of a competition of these in the Autumn of 1949. I'd like to know if this ever came to pass. And if it did what happened.. I've done the best I could to post the plan in a reasonably sized Gif with legible text. If you can't read something let me know. It is interesting to compare this with the 1912 Butler. |
