Bill Barnes and his
trusty crew ran a private air force in a pulp world - a twilight world
where guys that fix football games have private air forces, but no
one wears a cape.. With fascinating airplanes, they fought evil in many
forms. These stories are remembered fondly by many people who read his
adventures in the pulps and in Air Trails, a magazine that had a large
and well respected model section.
I would like to encourage modelers to recreate some of these airplanes. And to that end I've included a section with 3vus and a couple of plans for models. Unfortunately many of the good guy planes with small fins and large floats are not promising as free flyers. But I think Sandy's Eaglet shows promise. I once made a successful No Cal of the Scarlet Stormer. There are a number of possible fascinating Bad Guy airplanes, But I think you're on your own with the 3vus. I have tried to include enough drawings to allow resourceful and determined modelers to make their own.
The stories were
written by a number of folks all under the pseudonym George Eaton. But
to my mind the real creative force was Frank Tinsley who illustrated most
of the stories and as far as I can tell invented the fine collection of
airplanes. On this web site are already several example of his cover
work,. The

Pangborn Burmelli, A
small Payen in a huge page. The
planes flew and fought all over the world with an ease that must have seemed
miraculous in the thirties. The stories contain descriptions of the world,
exotic and now gone.... from the arctic to Madagascar.. .

Credit Stuff- Most of these pictures are from the pre war pulps (see below in Hectors list). Some exceptions...
The Blimp War came from Funny Times.
Air Trails March 51 provided the big red picture with Bills fleet above, the picture of the diving Charger on the New Good Guys page, the plan for the Snorter on the 3vu page, and the basis for the portrait of Bill that appears on all the page headings.. I received a reworked version of this from Hector and further reworked it, before I realized were it came from.
The New Eaglet drawing on the 3vu page is from the SEP85 and OCT85 Aeromodellers .
