Biography

Atlanta artist Patrick McGannon makes light and shadow as much the protagonists in his paintings as he does the figures themselves. He endows his painting with metaphysical meaning and plays with the viewer by purposely obscuring the sense of time and place that the events occur. He begins with the intimate and traditional studio experience of working from life, but the figures in the paintings seem to be removed from their contemporary contexts and instead are placed in landscapes that refer to an ambiguous place. McGannon expertly employs the dramatic visual effects of theatrical plays of light, exaggerated perspective and a sense of distance to visually emphasize its connection to time and the consequent implications of the ancient themes of birth, growth and death.

The artist lives and works in Atlanta GA.
