    Artist's Statement

    Classical Paintings in Modern Time

I work in a classical figruative style. Characteristic to my paintings is the highly developed detail which gives a very realistic impression. Even if the expression seems photographic, I often feel a high degree of freedom to the subject which expresses drama, personality and spirituality.

My paintings are "inner landscapes" even if they can be linked to particular places. I am concerned with psychological and existential questions and how these are present in the human expression and in nature.

I believe that the expression of the painting is hidden in the craftmanship, in the strokes of the brushes and palette knife, as the basic of all political and ideological expression; "-how you do it is more important than doing it-". "-All the ideas, all conceptions and all fashion in the contemporary art scene, will slowly fade away as history passes by. What will remain through ages, what always has lifted art up again, is how this art was done, how serious, how much energy, what depth and what kind of concentration and attitude did the artist show.

I take as my subject matter psychological and emotional states of mind and how these are reflected both in the human figure and in nature; "-even if this is classical it will always be modern.....".

Dag Hol has painted the largest realistic painting in Norway. "The King is Thinking", which shows Saint Olav and his men before the battle of Stiklestad in 1030 AD. This painting created a lot of interest in the press because of its theme and size, but also because of the controversy surrounding the painting, and popular opinion in favor of the painting's installation. Dag Hol is well known as one of the premier realistic artists in his country. Since 1983 he has had a large number of exhibitions throughout Norway and is in great demand there.
