Shikano-shima
Island

Page Three

The handsome devil above is a picture taken of myself on Shikanoshima in 1966, next to a wrecked ship that had been beached.

This map is a closer view of Shikano-shima, and the location of its shrines, monuments, parks and other features. The causeway in the lower right hand corner leads to Saitozaki.
As you can see, this small island is home to numerous sites and monuments. When I left in 1967, the city of Fukuoka was in the process of building eighteen monuments to Manyo-ka within the city, which was completed in 1976. Ten of these monuments can be found on Shikano-shima. Anthology of Classical Verse are closely connected to the local history, and as one visits these monuments one is reminded of the golden age of Manyo.

The hotel, centered above, was equally known for its baths as for its beach. Along the island's coast line are many beautiful rock formations and secluded coves. Shikanoshima and some surrounding areas are also part of the Genkai National Park, because of these and other reasons, which include the island being an archaeological and historic site.
